It is officially stated that the flotilla, including tho destroyer Sl7B, led at halfsteam, and steered, according to orders, eastwards, to give the cruisers room, The bad weather prevented the keeping of formations, and Sl7B attempted to cross ahead of the Yorck, but failed to manoeuvre properly. A collision, therefore, was unavoidable, ENGLISH STEAMER LOST. OVER 200 LIVES LOST. CONSTANTINOPLE, March' 8. (Received March 9, at 5.5 p.m.) The English steamer Calvados, trading locally, was lost in tho Sea of Marmora a week ago. Less of life at the time was officially denied, but it is now admitted that the crew and 200 passengers perished. FRENCH BARQUE ASHORE. TOTAL WRECK FEARED. , ADELAIDE, M'arch 8. The French barque Jean Hart, from Antwerp to Wallaroo, with a cargo of pig iron and coke, is 'ashore at Wardang Island, opposite Port Victoria. The crew have landed. It is feared she will become a total wreck. COASTAL STEAMER WEECKED. RED PL\E STRIKES A ROCK. VESSEL SINKS QUICKLY. (Per United PnEss Association.) WELLINGTON, March 8. The steamer, Red Pine, 364 tons, built in Sydney last year for tare West Coast timber trade, was wrecked during a dense fog. All hands were saved.
Later advices state that the Red Pine was laden with 134,000 ft of timber and 140 tons of ooal for Wellington, shipped at Greymputh.
A telegram received by the Marine Department says that the vessel struck a rock off D'Urville Island. The captain and crew have arrived at the French' Pass. The Bed Pina was 364 tons gross, 185 tons net, built of wood for the Red Pine Steam Ship Company, Greymquth. She was insured in Sydney in the British Dominions office and partly reinsured with the Queensland Companv. GREYMOUTH, March 8. Private advice .has been received of the wreck of the Red Pine at Stephen Island at 11 o'clock last night. A later wire reports that the steamer is now invisible, and has probably gone to the bottom of the sea. Her earco of ccal and timber was for Wellington. The owners of the vessel are the Pine' Steam Ship Company, of Westland. The vessel and cargo were insured, but the amounts are not available. NELSON, March 9.
The Aralmra brought to Nelson yesterday the crew of the steamer Red Pine, which was wrecked on Friday night two miles south from the 6cene of the wreck of the fee Douglas a couple of yeaTs ago. Captain Eden states tliat the vessel Tan into a fog, but he could see bush fires on D'Urville Island, and set a course which he thought would take the vessel safely past. Suddenly, however, she struck a rock, and sank so quickly that the crew had barely time to get away as they stood. Only one boat could be launched, and it stood by till daylight and. then made for the shore, where the castalways were hospitably treated by the settlers.
The crew.had been paid on the pre. vious day, and lost all their money and other effects. A MINOR MISHAP. (Per United Piiess Association.) WELLINGTON, March 8. The steamer Waimea, 452 tons, bound from Wanganui to Wellington, went ashore at OhaViu Bay during exceptionally heavy fog at 4 o'clock this morning. The vessel was floated off several hours later. Captain Stevens states that the steamer was tminjured.
