TRAWLERS' UNION.

A REJECTED AGREEMENT. Tho secretary of tho Dunedin Trawlers' Union has forwarded a communication to the Clerk of Awards explaining that at a mooting of tho union on Thursday night ho had been directed to inform him that ho had been instructed not to affix, tho seal of tho. union to the recommendations-contained in the agreement arrived at before tho Coociliation Commissioner (Ml' J. R. TriggS) and assessors on the 27th idt. . _ The union resolved that the recommendations be rejected for tho following reasons:—" (1) Becauso the council omitted to fix holidays other than tho day of rest and Christmas Day; (2) because firemen are bound to work houre for 2s 6d; (3) bccause clause 6 of said recommendations empowers the employer to withhold a man's wages, a concession to employers unheard of, and a concession that certainly would not stand the test of equity." Tho letter concludes:—" In conclusion, tho recommendations are altogether objcctionablo to my union, consequently ai'o not acceptable.' ■ In reference to tho above the following clauses, the only ones bearing on the matters complained of, may bo quoted:— • Holidays—Saturday or Sunday shall bo observed as a day of rest from work. Overtime aJid Holidays.—All work dono on the day of rest or the day preceding, Christmas Day or on-'Christmas Day, or oh the day preceding New Year's Day, or on tho day preceding Good Friday, shall be paid for extra per hour at rates that shall bo equal to the ordinary rates. All work done on tho days preceding Easter Monday, the Sovereign's Birthday, or Labour Day shall be paid extra pier hour at that shall be equal to half the ordinary ratos, ...

Hours of Work: The weok'6 work shall not exceed 70 hours, excepting fiTomen, subject to tho following conditions. . . Wages: (c) Firemen, deck hands, and oook—Firemen shall bo paid not less than £2 7s 6d per week and found; the increaso of 2s 6d on.the last award is.paid for getting up steam and banking fires; provided tho week's work shall not exceed 79 hours and tho day's work shall not exceed 134 hours; . . . (f) Employer shall bo entitled, to keep in liand three days' pay. General Provisions.—6. No deduction shall be made from the wages herein fixed savo for timo lost through/ wilful neglect or default of the worker, or as provided for in clause 7. A worker may bo dismissed without notice if during working hours ho be, in tho opinion of the' captain, intoxicated or has alcoholic liquor in his possession on board or for any ground which common law would justify tho immediate dismissal of a servant, or if he refuses to carry out tho orders of the captain, and any worker so dismissed shall forfeit, the pay kept in hand under clause (f) in section 2 [clause quoted above]. 7. Tho employment of a worker may bo terminated on cither ff.do by giving three days' notice or by forfeit or payment of three days' pay in lieu of notice.
