PORTOBELLO ROAD BOARD.

Tho monthly meeting of tho PortobeJlo Road: Board was held yesterday afternoon; present—Messrs Dickaon (chairman), Millar, Johnstone, Grainger, Scaton, Brunton, Baoon, Bransgrove, and Fulton. COItKESPONDE.VCE. Mr J. Blair Mason, secretary of tho Harbour Board, wrote stating that, owing to tho many urgent works now being undertaken by tho board, the -whole timo of the staff would bo fully occupied, and ho was therefore unable to undertake tho work of constructing the largo ferro concrete piles for the Anderson's Bay bridge. Tho class and size of tho piles referred to were not as used in the board's works, and -would therefore require epeoial moulds, etc., thereby adding to the cost of manufactureReceived. A notification was > received from the Publio Works Department that' Mr William S. Short had been appointed by tho Governor to bo a commissioner to hold an inquiry in terms of section 119 of "Tho Public Works Act, 1908," with reference to tho construction of - tho Anderson's Bay bridge—Received AUCKLAND EXHIBIHOX. A circular was forwarded by tho Mayor of Dunedin drawing attention to tho proposal to arrange for the representation of Otago province at the forthcoming exhibition at Auckland. It was estimated that £600 to £800 would be required to make a worthy exhibit, and of that sum the City Council had; agreed to donate £240, subject to each other local body in Otago contribute kg its quoita of the. balaooe, as assessed approximately on tho basis of the rateable value of the property comprised in its district Tho contribution of tho Portobello Board on that basis would bo £7 7a lOd. On the motion of Mr Fulton, it was decided to acoede to tho request, provided tho neighbouring local bodies agreed to contribute towards the project on a similar basis. inspector's report. North-East Harbour, Subdivision.—Th(. grader had cleaned up all the water tablet' on the Beach road, and had made a goodl job at a satisfactory cost. A start had been mado to spread 100 yards of metal in the vicinity of North-East Harbour. Further work was required to put the Wharfdale roads in proper order, and arrangements had been, made by tho vendor to do same at his own expense. Broad Bay Subdivision.—A good job had been made of the road formation in Margate township, ooeting £8, and metal for same would cost about £4. Thirty-five yards of maintenance metal had been put down-'on the Beach road from Gra®y Point to Broad Bay. Stone had been quarried at Ross Point for the sea wall opposite Bacon's, extending to the jetty. Portobello Subdivision.-rOwing to the absenco of the surfaceman, very little work had been done. A culvert was required for Kerr's roadlino, to replace the present one. Large quantities of sand were being blown on to the Kaik road from Lewis's land, and something diould be done to cope with it. Six miles of water tables had been graded at a cost of about 6d por chain, a saving of 2s 6d per chain over the old hand method. Stone Crusher.—lnformation asked for at last meeting was now available, and would' be laid before tho board. On the motion of Mr Millar it was resolved to employ the grader for a further period of eight days. Members agreed that steps should bo taken to prevent the 6and from drifting on to Lewis's road, and tho inspector was empowered to act with Mr Lewis in having the eand area planted with marram RTass. A considerable amonnt of data was dealt with relating to portable stone crushing machines, and, on tho suggestion of the chairman, consideration was held over for a special meeting to be held a fortnight hence, and the report was adopted. GENERAL. Mr Millar reported that, in company with Mr Brunton, he had waited upon the Minister of Public Works with reference to road grants, and the Minister had signified his inability to alter tho vote from pound to pound to. a straight out vote for the formation of Dickson's Hill road.—Tho Chairman remarked that the deputation deserved the thanks of the board for its action, in the matter.—Approved.

The Ranger reported having found 6ix horses and six cows on the roads during the month. On the motion of Mr Fulton it was resolved to pay the Hall Committee £5 per annum for the use of the board room. Mr Fulton drew attention to the action being taken by the Bay Town Board with regard to the Anderson's Bay Inlet, and said the Portobollo Road Board should protest- vigorously against tho, proposed road deviation, which would increase the distance from the city to Portobello by fully three-quarters of a mile.—Tho Chairman pointed out that the Mayor of Dunedin had already decided against any deviation of the road referred to. Tho "Bay Town Board had no power to act in the manner suggested without the consent of the other bodies interested, and such consent was not likely to bo given.
