CIVIL SERVICE COMMISSION.
PROGRESS OF WORK. (Peb United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, March 5. In order to carry out, as far as practicable, the decision to see every officer in the public service before issuing their first classification, the Public Service Com* missioners will proceed to the South Islands to-night. It is officially announced that since the commissioners assumed office at the beginning of the year the progress of tJie; work undertaken has been greater than, anticipated. The inspection of departments, preparation and regulations under; the Act, and preparation and first draft and classification proceeded concurrently.! The inspection of departments by the' commissioners themselves will occupy ,i> greater portion of the present year, but in order to bring the inspection into a. forward state a committee of expert record; clerks was set up to report on the systems; of record in the Government department, with the object of adopting the best system for all branches or the service. Tho' report of that committee is now under theconsideration of the committee of expend accountants from the public service, who are now making inquiries with the object of ascertaining whether there is duplication or overlapping in the. ranks. Thiscommittee is expected to report about the t middle of April. The report of the statistician, who is also examining the. statistical work of departments, with the; object of ascertaining where improvements' can be made in classification, should bo ready about the first of June.
