DOMINION RIFLE ASSOCIATION

MEETING AT TRENTHAM. (Per United Peess Association.) ; _ TRENTHAM, March 5. The shooting at Trentbam started at 8 this morning with the final stage of the Nelson Match (900 yards), tho first stage of 800 yards hating been completed tho previous afternoon. To-day, as yesterday, the shooting was at times Tory much affected by the stiff, varying breeze. Tho light at tho opening was • soft, sombre clouds obsouring tho sun for a time. Later a .bright, unobstructed sun prevailed. The baffling character .of the wind during the afternoon mado it difficult for many of the riflemen to get on the bull's-eye, though in a few instances 6ome excellent shooting was done. At the 900 yards' rango Carter-, of Nelson, was the only scorer of a possible, though his shorter range score discounted his match total. Ho only soored 38 at 800 yards. The nearest approach to a possible for both ranges was 93, and this total secured ftnst, second, and third prizes respectively for H. Chee6eman (Tuamarina), Bruoo (New Plymouth), and M'Murray (To Awamutu). Carter's possible was a remarkable piece of shooting, though he had the advantage of tho soft morning light, and M'Kay (Dunedin) also showed fine form. Ho missed with his sighter and the first business shot, and then put on eight bull's-eyes in succession, ending up with a 3. The Otago Match, 800 and 1000 yards, and a couple of long distance extra matches filled in the iifternoon. At the 800 yards M'Calmont (Opaki) got within one of tho possible, and Batten (Auckland) scorcd 48.< , Forty-seven were put up by Shannon (Wellington), Yeo (Auckland), and Brcnnan (Wanganui), At the 1000 yards there wore a couplc of 47's, Cuthbertson (Tuamarina), and Smith (Kaponga.l being the top scorers at this figure.' Shannon, with the match total of 93 (47, 46), was the winner, with L. Loveday (Woodville) runner-Tip with 91.
