MAORI GATHERING.
OFFICIAL OPENING.
(Pee United Press Association.) GISBORNE, March 5.
The great hui at Manutnke was opened to-day in the presence • of hundreds o.f spectators. The Minister of Native Affairs, who was accompanied by the Hon. Dr Pom arc and Messrs Carroll and Macdonald, and Mr Justice Cooper, was received with a spectacular haka by 160 members of the Ngatipuru tribe, and in response to tho address of welcome he outlined the Native policy on the lines of his Waneanui speech. Mr A. T. Ngata, on behalf of tho Natives, to carefully consider the Minister's speech and forward a reply to him. The hui will bo continued for about a fortnight, and a discussion on affairs affecting the welfare of the people is expected to commence to-morrow. The Hon. Mr Herries will leave Gisbornc to-morrow for Tokomarn Bay and Auckland, land will arrive in the northern city on Sunday. Dr Pomare will remain in Gisborne till Sunday, and perhaps longer. The Hon. Mr Frasej will arrive here next Wednesday.
