THE WEST COAST DISTURBANCES.
(Per United Press Association.) WESTPORT, February 25. From 8 o'clock yesterday morning till 11.30 last night tho community wa-s undisturbed by earth shocks. At 11.30, however, there was a dull boom with a little vibration. At 12.17 a.m. therc was another cannonade, followed by a very pronounced shaking. No damage was done by any of the numerous shocks since tho lively couple of minutes at midday on Saturday. ■ The origin of the disturbance was pjainly to tlia south-west of Westport. It must have been relatively close, too, as no damage was done at Greymouth on the one side, and there was only an initial shock felt at Karamea on the other side. The colliers describe. Saturday's experience as pandemonium let loose. The women and children throughout the district are unnerved. DISTURBANCE AT SEA. ' (Per United Pbess Association.) AUCKLAND, February 25. When tho Katoa, from Westport to Auckland, was off Westport at 12.30 on Saturday, she was lifted by a submarine disturbance and shaken from stem to stern. The sensation was as though the steamer had been raised from under and was scraping her way over a derelict. The shock lasted four seconds, and had no appreciable effect on the sea. Captain Norton is of the. opinion that the centre of tho disturbance was out at sea.
