THE WOOL SALES. (FliOU Oon Own CoBIIESrONDENT.) LONDON, September 27. Mossrs Charles liable and Co. write that the level of values established at the oponing of tho sales has been fully confirmed by tho restdt of last night's auction. Merino wools wero then thoroughly tested, and elicited keen ooinaotition from both Continental and Homo buyors. Tho grades purcliased by tho former do not show any very substantial improvement in vaJuo, but combing greasics suitable for tho tatter's requirements may bo quoted 5 per cent, dearer tlian in July. Tho figures realised for top-making wools, suoh as now-clip West Australians and somo of tho heavy-condi-tioned Port Phillips, marked a distinct advance.
Now Zealand scoured incrixios, whioh sold to a/lvajitago lust series, aro not appreciably dearer. Very few lots of greasy cross-broda snitablo for tho Ainorioan market haw so far p.vu«l tlio liamincrj consequently it is difTicult to gaugo tho eia/:t position of such wools. Tho eoalo of values for other sorts in tho grrafo, however, has been well established, and whilo tho fino quAlitics aro only occasionally highor, modiums may bo quoted 5 por cent., and coarso 7J por cont., abovo July parity. Prices for sliped halfbrcds show no oltange, but those for medium orosabreds havo advanced 2J to 5 por cent., and coarso 7j to 10 per cent., in each grado tlio riao being most noticeablo on clothing parcels. Soourcd cro6Bbrcd6, particularly New Zealand shipmonts, aro meeting with a much moro satisfactory rcoeption from tlio tra/lo than ot tho closo'of tbo July sales, fino sorts realising 5 per cent, and medium and coarso 7f to 10 por cent aborvo tho rates then current. Tho Now Zealand I<oan and Mercantilo Agency Co. reports that villi active general competition values for ncajly all descriptions rulo in sellors' favour. Tho tono of tho market at tbo closo is strong. Messrs Dalgoty and Co. say" Subsoqnoat sales havo ehown somo hardening in quotations, and ns tho position seeins sound wo anticipate that prices will bo wellmaintained until tho oloso o{ tho serios." BUTTER. Tlio mako of butter in tho United Kingdom and Europe, Messrs Wcddel report, is diminishing weok by week, as is usual at this timo of tlio year, and consequently tho demand for imported butter will imptovo. Tho recent t'isc in pr.ee !»»-, already brought moro demand for Australian, especially of "choicest" quality. Inferior grades, nowover, havo not experienced any improved demand worth mentioning. Butter of this quality shows bettor valtto at tho present time in Siberian, and consequently AustraInn is of slow and dragging sale. Shipments advised by cable oompriso 12,800 boxes from Australia, and the Turakinn, with 8400 boxes from New Zealand, is duo in Lonllon early in November. Tho New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company Bays thero is n limited supply of Australian choicest and secondary ununited, and tbo demand all round bus I improved. There are no supplies of New Zealand on spot. " Factories are still asking such extremo prices as Is Old to lfi Old, f.0.b., and buyers on this side aro in consequenco holding oil." The northern centres aro experiencing a better demand for Paniili. Somo 9000 casks of Siberian wero landed this week of which tho cl : oiccfit realised readily 110s l« 112s; medium qualities however dragged. FROZEN 7 MEAT. As tho result of a falling off in supplies from the ltivcr I'lato shortly after our last report, valuos for all descriptions of froien mutton marked a sharp advanco. Tho higher level of prices lias materially curtailed tho demand, and rccontJy slightly lower values havo been accepted in somo instanccfl. A very poor trado has been experienced for frozen lamb, many buyers giving tho preference to home-killed and Duteii. Scotch hill lambs wero sold as low as 53<1. Values for C-anterburys tbow little change. For North Islands, which aro plentiful, lower rates have ruled. For chilled beef tho market has again been irregular. A disappointing trado for the most part has ruled, but with much lightor supplies ofToring prices havo been in seller*' favour.' Thero has been little business passing in frozen sorts, and prices have ruled lower.
lX>aling with New Zealand mutton, tlio Colonial Consignment and Distributing Comi>any reports that thn onlv crrival during tho week was the Star of India, wrtii 48.229 carcases. Afloats, too, are very light, and holders havo no necessity to move any quantity in excess of tlio normal requirements of the market. Prices are a littlo firmer than last week, being a slmdo muler 4Jd a pound for North Island mutton. Canterbury lieing quotahly unchained.
Fro7.cn Lamb —Arrivals comprise 16,599 carcases from Now Zealand, nothing from Australia, and approximately 14,000 carcases from South America. The position shows signs of wenknoss, partly owing to tho slaekncifi in demand, but also dtio to speeulntors showing somo inclination to offer under current ratca. There does not appear, however, lo bo any real cause for anxiety as to the future. Somo River Plate lambs of good quality are in evidence in small quantities all over tho market, and are fetching fair prices.
Froien Beef.—Arrivals hnvo boon heavy, nomprisinp 3466 quarters from Now Zealand, 121,136 quarters from Australia, and 41,315 quarters from South America. It speaks well for the steadiness of the market and the conditions under which tlio trade is beinp handled that prices havo been maintained in spite of the arrival of about 37.500 quarters of chilled beef. _ AHhoucrh nt t'ho present linio there is no iiifltiiry for forward'shipments, there is a fooling- of confidence in the future of the market.
