ART SOCIETY'S EXHIBITION
PRELIMINARY NOTICE.
Those who have been privileged to niako a private inspection of tho pictures to bo shown at tlio annual exhibition by tlio Otago Art .Society will no doubt in pcrfect agreement that this year's collcction _is even more intending mid comprehensive titan those of previous years. As fur as numbers are concerned t.he works aro about the same. There are somewhat fewer water uolours, lr.it more oil paintings; in fart, it swn.s probable that it is one of the largest and finest collections of canvascs that hayo yet lieen hung' by the society lor inspection, und local artists and those at a distanco arc well and worthily represented by the works upon which they have been busily onga.ged during the year, ilany of the pictures are of high merit, and such deficiencies as tho optical may discover cannot be said to liavo any prominent existence, They aro certiinly not of a glaring order, and they aro but seldom mot with.
Tho exhibition this year is greatly strengthened l>y tho inclusion of soven piotures from Wellington, whioh wero selected from tlio Baillio collection, and becamo the property of tlio citizens of Wellington. Ono of tlicso arrests attention directly tho eye rests upon it. It is a vory largo work in oil, is entitled " Itofiomakors of tho East End." and is from the brush of Melton Fisher. Both drawing and colouring aro altogether exceptional, and the figure work is wonderful. It is a picture that is alono worth 6eoing, but it is only one of many tint art lovers will tako a pure delight in studying. It may be exported also that patrons will bo delighted with Mount I/indon's " Who and Gold."
Among tho 192 oils aro two easily recognisable portraits, a beautiful landscapo and a figure study by 11. A. Park, a couple of prominent works by .T. F. Sooti (oi Adelaide), and skilful productions by R. Wallwork (of Christchurch), William Greene (of Tima.ru), Phyll's Pigott, C. F. Goldic, Hermm Amdt (of Wellington), W. Allen Bollard, Margaret Sale, J. M. G. W. Oarrington, L. Do Ycto Percy, A. S. Wood, C. 11. Howorth, Vera. Cliapman, M. K. R. Tripe, and D. K Button, while many other art'Ms of note well sustain their reputation. There are 130 water colours contributed by W. Litter I/ster (of Sydney), A. •!. Hanson (of Sydney), R. Henderson Smith (of Ohristch'urch), Mabel Hill (of Dnti'.'din), If. Linlcy Richardson (of Weil'ligtonl, W. Wright (of Auckland), T. W. Smith (of Wellington). J. Balfour (of f'hrs'olinroh), 11. R. Cole (of Dtincdin), J. Wimperii; (of Duncd'in), Iv R. Roblson (of Wellington), and many others. Lionel Lindsay is the ohicf contributor in etchings, of wh : /-li there are 34. Painted china, pewter modelling, poker work, and photos in natural colours are also included.
The exhibition will be opened bv his Excellency the Governor tomorrow afternoon at 3 o'clock.
