SYDNEY, November 9.
llio president of the Libour Council says that Mr Ileeby has not been turned down. He denies receiving nnv cfiicial communication from the Labour Executive regarding tho referenda, and says he will not support, any proposal for the transference of the whole field of commcrco to the Commonwealth. In the Assembly Mr Holman introduced a Bill providing for wider and mo<ro stringent inter-State action dealing with wife deForters. One proviso is that offenders under arrest shall be compelled to work for their own maintenance, the balance of the pay earned going to satisfy orders made against lliem. Cruelly-tiealcd or neglected wives are to ho allowed to live apart from their husbands, who will be compelled to maintain them and the children. Mr Cnrmichncl announced t.linl no action of tho (ins Company in dismissing men, or statements calculated to intrude on tho affairs of the Gasmen's Union, would be allowed to affect the Bill now before Parliament.
