OWNING OF THE SEASON. The opening; of the sea-son for grade matches under the imrjiicps of tho Otago C'riokot Association took placo on Saturday in lino weather. Tlie heavy rain on Friday night rendered tlie wicket slow and the outfields dead. [n the First CJrade matches (all to be played on turf wickets this season) scoring was low. and bowlers liad an ascendancy over t-iie batsmen. FIRST GRADE. DI'XEUIX v. Cawsbhook A. This match was begun on tho Caledonian Goruml, the wicket licing slow and tricky. I'unulillc, who was elected captain of Duncdin, won ihe toss from Siedcbcr;}, and batted, Bryden and L. Chadwiek arguing the innings to Ranncrman and Rntherlord. In the second over Bryden put Rutherford into the slips and was hold. Mackersy, who fo.lowed, was uncertain, but managed to keep them down. After scoring 7in nice style Chadwiek pulled Biinnerinan high and hard, and was caught by Hopkins running in from amongst the Second Grade field. It was a good catch. Stephens brightened matters up a bit, but the play genorally was painfully slow. Stephens was caught from a very "green " stroke, and the last four batsmen accounted for but 2 runs between them, leaving CondlilTo not out with 9, included in which were a couple of pretty off-strokes. Carishrook made 83 in the first, innings, Nugent (21), Moon (18), and Cameron (Ift) reaching doublo figures. St. Kilda replied with 111 for nino wickets. Turner (76) was tho principal scorer. L. Edwards (six for 14) for St. Kilda and Cuddie and Wallace for Carishrook were the mcr.t successful Iwwlors. Mornington met Christian Brothers on the Asylum Ground. For tho winners Holdaway (12), Bayliss (20). and Brooks (10 not out) batted weil,- and Milier took live wiokots for 8 runs. St Kilda defeated Anderson's Ray lib Anderson's Bay. Tho Bay made 25 runs, Begg (7) and Cameron (6) being the highest worcrs. St. Kilda replied with 105, Chapman (24 retired). Tillyshort (IS), and Livingstone (14 not G'.ft; being the highest scorer*. T'illyshorl, W'augh, and Miller shared tho bowling honours for St. Kilda, as did Eaton and Irvino for tho Bay. High Sbhcol defeated Mornington bv 66 runs. Scores: High School. 112 (Whito 29, Spedding 17, Grecnslade 17, Pilling 17, F. Iliitohison 16): Mornington, 46 (Nelson 10). For tlie High School Woods took four wickets for 10 runs, and J. D. Hutohison three for 3.

Albion defeated Dunedin on tho North Ground bv 98 runs to 55. For the winners Malcolm (32) and Willow (15) batted well, as did Black (17) and Auld (13 not out) for tho losers.

MATCHES IN AUCKLAND. (P-a United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, November 3. The second round of matohes was commenced yesterday. The weather was dull, but tho wickets wero in fair order. In the match Eden v. Ponsonby Ponsonby mado 140 oral Kdeu put on 89 for tho loss of thrco wickets. Cummings (Eden) took four wickets for 20 runs, and mado 41 not out. Parnell compiled 227 against Grafton, Wright hatting well for 123. Pratt took fivo wickets for 26. Grafton scored 47 for the loss of five wickets. University mado 04 against North Shore, the latter team scoring 158 for the less of nine wickets (&vlo 51 not out).
