CITY IMPROVEMENTS.
Tho building in Moray plaoe lately tho Colteo Palace, and now known as the Criterion Hotel, lias been taken over by Mr Jas. Murphy. Tho owner has taken tho fullest advantage of his now property to malto it tho most up-Uxlalo hotel in Dun< cdin for tho accommodation of tho travelling public. From top to bottom tho hotel lias boon thoroughly inspected, and whatever has boen necessary, both for tho convenience and safety of his patrons,; has been attended to. Externally, tho building ltas boon painted right round; tho old firo escapes havo been provided with extra rails and wiro netting for tlio safety of ladies and t children; and new escapes havo been prorided at the roar of tho building. On each floor an cfTioiont water firo acrvico has been provided with hoso to roach into every room and corner of tho building; ami tho service has boen installed to fit tho Dunedin Firo Brigado's equipment, in addition to what is in tho building. At tho front ontranco a haixlsomo portico will bo erected, with a flat promonado roof on lop, tho frieze leadlight design. An up-to-date elcctrio passcngor lift is also being installed, which will servo «toh floor. A Jartro loungo will bo proTided, lighted with ornamental pendants ab each landing. ; Telephone aro on each floor. A new oiroular bar has been fitted on tho ground floor, with polished rimu and cedar ooiintors—tho fittings bcinc enamelled white. 'Tho lavatories nro nl ; . furnished in. enamelled white glazed tilo, and aro up to dato in ail respects, whild those on tho upper floors with maxblo baths aro furnished in enamel whito, tho gliizinff being in Luxfcr prismatio glass. Tho work is boing carried out by Mr.W. Farquharson, contractor; fittings by Mr Elliot, Dnnodin Timber Company: lifts and firo escapes by Messrs A. and T. Burt; painting by Messrs A. Lees; electric lighting by Messrs Turnbiill and Jones j plumbing by Mr Clarko; and verandah and steel work by Messrs Drinslcy and Company, under' tho stipcrrision of Mr K. W.
