WELLINGTON, Tviigiiut 22. During tlio hearing of a divarcc caea in Wellington today .Mr Justice Edwards told Mr Wilford, who was appearing (or a client, that ho (the judge) must keep within the requirements of the law in these cases. "II," he added, "you want legislation you must _act in another capacity, .Mr Wilford." lie went on to say that lie did not wish to place any impediment, in tho way of the petitioner to prevent her from getting the rcle;use which «ho desired and which she ought to have. Hut if you pass legislation tightening tho bonds which can he productive only of vice it is not my fault. When you do get :i beneficial enactment <|iwe liy accident it is repealed, its was done recently, in consequence, I understand, of u joko unfortunately made by one of my learned brothel*. It was a thousand pities, because that enactment was productive of nothing hut good. In another case a witness who wished to hurry through his evidence was stopped * by liis Honor. " I have got to take a note of this evidence," said his Honor. " Wc aro getting rather lax in our divorce proceedings I don't want it to bo like Chicago: Over tho train waits—lo minutes for a divorce. We arc :mt as bad as that, but we are going that way."
