CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

MEETING OK COMMITTEE. Tlio monthly meeting of the committee of the Chamber of Commerce was held yesterday afternoon, and was attended by Messrs G. 11. Ritchie (president), •). Loudon, W. Gow, J. W. Henton. W. I''. Sligo, E. R Dutliic, W. E. Reynolds, W. A. Moore, A. S. Palerson, Crosby Morris, and R. Jamieson.

A letter was received from the Hull Incorporated Chamber of Commerco and Shipping, introducing Mr Austin Wilson, who was nmkiii" a tour of Now Zealand with tho object of bringing under the notice of shippers and producers in the Dominion information relating lo the facilities existing at the port of Hull for the handling and storago of produce and manufactures, and also to the savings in dock and carriage charges which would ensue from the adoption of tlio port as a centre of distribution of New Zealand trade with tho markets north of England.—The Secretary reported that Mr Wilson had called on him and had left papers giving a considerable amount of information with reference to the port of Hull; and that ho had afforded Mr Wilson such asssitancc as the chamber could give.—-The secretary was instructed to reply lo the Hull Cham ber advising it that somo stranters bad already distributed at the port of Hull, and Hint whilo the chamber was willing to assist as far as passible in the matter brought before it, tho trade would have to bo opened tip and pushed from that end.

Tho I'almerslon North Chamber of Commerce wrote conveying the resolution passed by it expressing appreciation nf the attitude of the Minister of Defence in connection with tho compulsory conditions nf the Defence Act, and asked this eliambor to pass similar resolutions and forward same to the Minister.—lt was resolved to support tho resolutions and address the Minister to this effect.

A letter was received from the secretary of tho British Empire league giving particulars of tlio movement. to establish a trado market, for goods manufactured or produced in the British Empire, and askIll}! for Uio support of the chamber, and also desiring Hint it bo represented on t-lio Provisional Council.—lt was deeidod to agree to tlio request, and to ask for reports as to the future progress of the movement. The Wellington Chamber of Commerce forwarded draft rules for tho proposed association of New Zealand chambers of commerce, and also advised that it was lio|H'd to mako arrangements for a general meeting of chanilwrs in Wellington in Juno.—lt was resolved to approve of tho conferenco being held in Wellington, tlio proposed rules in the meantime being referred to tlio president and secretary for consideration and a report. Mr A. S. Malcolm, XI.P., wroto with reference to a visit of inspection of tho Clullia Yalloy ront-o by tlio chain her—The suggestion was approved, and the matter left, to tlm president and vice-president with power to mako arrangements. Tlio Secretary of tho Auckland Industrial, Agricultural, and Xlining Exhibition, to lie held in tho year 1913-14, wroto asking that tho .president of the local chamber aJlow his name to bo placed on the provisional committco list.—This was agreed to.

Tho Export- Committee submitted a report with reference to the matter of supply of standard samples and cereals, as reipiesM by the London Current Trade Association and tlio Sydney Chamber of Commerce. Tho report stated that it had been found unnecessary to establish, standard samples at tho jwrt of Duiiodiii, as tho qualities dealt with wero limited "and tlio tradeis were prepred to work under the Canterbury standards of wheat, peas, and l>e;ms, and tho Hluff standard for oats for shipment from Dimedin. 'Hie committee recommended thai tlio chamber's correspondents bo advised in accordance with its report.—Approved. The sub-cnmmil.teo appointed at tho last meeting submitted a draft copy of a prujHised circular embodying tho results of tho observations made during tho recent tour through Central Otago.—Tho circular was approved, and it was decided to send copies of it to members of Parliament and also to members of tho chamber, in addition (o N tho various leagues and local bodies interested.
