After each man had scored a single, Bardsley cut Barnes to tho boundary, In Foster's third over Kcllcway was bowled. One for 6. The scorn was unaltered when, in Barnes's next over, Bardsley was snapped up at the wickets. Hordern and Ransford batted cautiously, "When he had scored 6 Ransford had to retire temporarily owing to a severe blow on tiie left thumb from a ball 'sent down by Foster. Armstrong, who came next, hit two 4'a o!f Names, who at 32 was replaced by Douglas. Fester bowled splendidly, and none of the batsmen could hit him. After he had bowled 11 overs for 8 runs Hearnc gave him a spell. At tho.lunclieon adjournment the total was 45 runs for 85 minutes' play, the bowling being very fine. Hordorn had simply blocked it, with the object of wearing it down. Foster and Barnes bowled after luncheon, and the runs came more rapidly. Armstrong hit each lmwler to the boundary. but was then bowled off his pads by Foster, Armstrong had batted soundly, for 59 minutes, during which timo ho hit four 4's. H'hrco for 65. Trumjier's second stroke was a fine cover hit lo the -boundary off Barnes. Hordern drove tho same bowler to tho boundary, but then was easily caught lit short square leg. He was in for 103 minutes, and sedulously stonewalled. Five for 94. The next 10 minutes were disastrous. Hill received two balls, and off tho second was magnificently slumped by Smith, who brought back the ball a foot from thf leg side. Five for 88. Three halls settled Minnctt, who was bowled by a lieanty. Fester had then captured five wickets for 23 runs. Matthews came next. Each batsman hit n 4. but thon v Matthews was easily caught behind the howler. Seven for 97. Four byes completed 100, which were compiled in 145 minutes. At tho tea adjournment tho score was 125 for nine wickets. (Received Jan. 12, at 10 p.m.) The innings was soon finished after lea. Douglas getting Carter in flic slips off bis first over after relic-ring Barnes. r The calamitous innings occupied 197 minutes. There was no excuse for the. Australians. Foster bowled magnificently, being alwavs accurate and often swinging the width of tho wicket, but nevertheless the Intting was nerveless and lacking in daali. A forcing player might bavo made a lot of difference. Tho fielding was close and brilliant. Smith, at the wickets, wa<* especially smart, and hifl stumping of II ill was a masterpiece. With an hour left for play, the Englishmen commenced their innings with TJobhs and Rhodes, who faced the bowling of Cotter and nordrm. They soon showed how true lh" wicket was by forcing off strokes against Colter, each batsman driving him for 4. Tlnbl« jumped out to Hordern. and bit him down the ground, but Rhodes was not so comfortable. Half an hour's play produced 28 runs. At 39 Hordern changed ends, Kellowav relieving Colter. Rhodes was still troubled by tho slows, but worried himself out of tho trouble. He took 46 minutes to mako 10. When he was 25 TTolib's skied ono from Hordern, hut tho hall fell safely behind mid-off. At A3 Mallhows replaced Hordern, and appealed confidently for leg before against Hobhs, but tho umpire, ruled against him. Matthews was bowling with a fine length, and kept tho batsmen nniel. Rhodes nearly TClurncd a ball to him. .They played out .time, tho total being 49 Both batted sonnddly and confidently, and never looked to be, in serious trouble.
