Regarding tho statement contained in tho Press Association's report of Mr Millar's Dunedin speech that tho Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants at Palmcraton North had pissed a resolution condemning him up hill and down dalo, and >üb.vquently rescinded it, tho representatives of tho A.B.H.S. at Palmers ton North desire (fays a Press Association tolegram) to point out that there must bo a misapprehension, on the part of tho MinUter Thoir resolution did no; mention tho Minister of Railways at all, but protested against tho promise of a minimum wago of 9s per day inado in the Budget not being given efTect 10. Thoy had not rescinded this resolution.
Soveiral typographical errors crept into our report of tho Hon. Mr Millar's speech at tho Garrison Hell on We<fnesday night. In referring to tho interest charges, Mr Millar said thpro was an inoreaso of £60,991 (not £96,000) which would havo to bo met by whatever Government was in power. Spccking of the loans, ho said that the present was tho first Government in Now Zealand "of recent years" which had made provision for repayment. On tho spmo subject he also remarked: "By tho payment of £150,000 a year, together with compound interest, tho loans would bo redeemed at the end of 75 years." Tho sum of £407,000 was produced by graduated incomo tax, not by the land tax, and tho rovenue from luxuries amounting to £500,000 was for tho 1900-8 period, and not for one year.

It is unfortunate that the littlo group of pictures sent forward by Mr R, Herdnmn Smith, of Christchurch, arrived too lato for inclusion in tho Otago Art Society's annual exhibition, where they would have been a wolcomo accessory to tho watercolour department. However, art lovors havo now tho opportunity of viewing Mr Hcrtfman Smith's work at Mr D. Scott's warehouse in Moray Place, and will find it amply repay inspection. In tho majority of tho present instances the attist has drawn inspiration from tho famous old YorktJu'ro fishing town of' Whitby, of which ho has furnished tomo charming water-colour glimpses. Tho inarket-placo and tho fuhermon's cobblca aro picturesque tubjects admirably lending themselves to tho realisation of most efTrctivo results both in drawing and colouring, an<| (here is no doubt about the success achieved in tho whole treatment of tho largest of tho picturw, ontitlod "Richmond on Swaledalo, Yorkshire," which is an extremely taking piece of landscape work. Mr Herdman Smith's pictures includo also a very happy littlo viow of Now Zealand scenery of tho quieter kind, tho subject being a cottage old enough to bo historio at Avon Head, Christchurch.
A sheep-guessing competition at tho Tapanui show on Wednesday proved a rather profitablo concern for tho Farmcra' Club, no lc9s titan £5 being realised from this source. Tho pmo awarded to tho winner was £1, and tho entrance fco w a modest shilling. Mr Simon ' Fleming was tho sucoossful competitor, ncd he gitcjued tho correct weight, 35811b, of tho two sheep penned for tho purpose of tho competition. Mi® Taylor, of Tawntii. won tho prizo for tlx) best ledy rider, and Ivor mount also was awarded first honours for the best lady's hack in tho show. Mrwi Kempthnrne, Prossor and Company had a very fino exhibit of manures and veterinary instruments, which occupicd tho attention of farmers, who appeared to bo greatly interested in tho dilTorcnt kinds of manures. Tho firm'# representative in attendance was plied with innumerable questions as to the merits of the various exhibits l>y thoso who inspected his stall.

Tho caso was dealt with summarily. Mr It. R. Grigor appeared for accmod, who pleaded guilty, Mr Grigor, in making a strong ploa for leniency, said that tho girl had been cruelly botrayed: her mother was ill at tho time, and tho girl was afraid of tho consequences if she wero informed of her condition. Two days beforo tho birth of tho child she discovered that tho person who had been the cause of hor troublo was a married man. Owing to physical and montal distress she had committed tho cctinamomcnl of madnos3, her only thought being U get tho chi!«? out of tho wayj but sho wrapped it up and left it in a toft place where sho Know it would bo discovered next morning. Ho submitted thai a light penalty would be sufficient. Soma friends had sinrc taken the girl to their homo in tho country, and offered to keop her and look after her, whoro sho wo'uW
