THE CHOIR CONTEST.
Tho following is a summary of tho remarks of the judgo (Mr Baojcrti) in connection with tne choir contest at tho Wellington Competitions: — Grafton Road Choir.—ln the "Faust" chonis sopranos had a habit of slurring any intervals; lino significance- in the words; cronxMido from bar 55 was effoetivo; inlonution capital; a well-balanced clwir. In tho hvmn there wero several mistakes in enunciation; very good nuance. Tho tenors camo in too soon in tho last verso. It was a dramatic rending, but a little lacking in "organ"' quality. An excellent performance. In ■ the anthom this choir took tho cpanjnfr, too quickly, but its accent and atLiel was gcod. A spirited jicrfornianco, though taken too fast. Tho marks were— Anthem, Ml; hvmn, 144; "Soldiers' Chorus," 151;—tolal, 436. Green Island Choir.—Regarding tho " Faurt" eliorus, tho judgo stated that this choir had good staccato, _ but tho sopranos wem apt to slur on the high notes. Their enunciation was good, but they ended flit. Tho rending was a little dull, and lacking in snirit. In tho hymn tho basses &nd tenors wero not too 6iire, nnd tlioir diction was rather faulty. They ended n little flat. In the anthem tho sopranos were u little sharp, and tho bosses flat in placm. Tho quality of voices not so good as that of tho winners, and all wero out of tuno in places; tempo at opening and ending correct. opening of tho "Soldiers' Chorus" was good, but enunciation not perfect! good attack for tho most part; artioulstion faulty; loir bulaiico nnd blend. In tho hymn tho sopranos wcro inclined to bo sharp. Tlv> tonors wero good nnd effective, and tho choir had a good crescendo ami diminuendo. Tho third verso was slurred in places. TT>o choir got some colour into the hymn, ami showed somo variety of treatment. Good enunciation. In tho anthem tho opening was taken too quickly, and thcro was a lack of breadth. .Sopranos and tenors were weak. Tho tonors nnd eoprnnc* shouted tho leads; tho basfos (i'roned, and thoy showed n lack of resonance and quality and colour. Tho marks wore:—Anthem, 92; hvinn, 114; "Soldiers' Chorus," 110;— total. 316.
