(Received October 11, at 9.35 p.m.) After consulting a number of representatives of the employers ami workmen, the Board of Tntde has established an Indiir'trial Council of 26 members, consisting of equal numbers of employers and workmen, holding oflico for a year, to infjiiiro into trade disputes. The council will have, no compulsory powers. Members representing shipping, mining, metals, printing, railways, cotton, engineering, building, textile, transport and other trades have already been appointed with Mr Askwith as chairman. The council includes Mr T. L. Devitt., the presidents of the various Masters' Associations, .Mr Henderson, Mr Hurt, and other leading trade nninn ollieiiils. STRIKE IN WINNIPEG. At a special meeting of members of tho Auckland Watersido Workers' Union today it was decided to take, a lmllot between Tuesday, IGtli itist., and Saturday, 21st ins!., on the question of cancellation under the act- and registration with tlio New Zealand Federation of Labour. A number of tlio men contended that it was useless going before the Arbitration Court with demands for betterment- of existing conditions, and a sti'oni: feeling prevailed in favour of cnttiiu,' adrift from tlio Arbitiation Court to give the workers a iroe band in pursuing the redress of grievances until satisfaction was obtained. WELLINGTON FIRE BRIGADE. CONCESSIONS AVERT STRIKE. (Piw Onrntn Piikm ASsofciATmit | WELLINGTON, October 11. Humours were current to-day that tho Fire Brigade intended to strike if its demands were not agreed to, but this was possibly averted by a conference with a committee, which made an offer. The men having acceptcd this, the council met in the afternoon and ratified the terms agreed to. The wages are raised to 1!2 for probationer!; and from £2 3s to £2 10s for firemen. Senior hands also get advances, am] range from 52s 6d to G2<; fid. Councillors complimented the Mayor (.Mr T. M. Wilforrl) on the tact with which lie had handled the situation. Arrangements bad been ninth' to utilise llif volunteer brigade and the fire police if the men refused to come to- terms.
