OTAGO DIOCESAN SYNOD. Fototh Day—Thursday. The Anglican Synod continued its sitting yesterday, $10 Very Rev. Dean Fitchett presiding. Thero was a fairly large attendance of members. THE LATK MB 0. COOPER. Rev. A. R. tfitahett moved, and, afk j. 'brief discussion, it was carried, all standing—" That this Synod places on record its appreciation of the valuable services rendered: by the late Charles Cooper, as lay reader at Roxburgh, in the parish of Dunstan, during 35 years, and that a copy of this resolution, bo forwarded to Mr Cooper's family." SILLS rASGED. Tho bill to re-define tho boundaries of St. John's, Invorcargill, was read a second time and passed. Tho bill to alter the namo of the parisli of St.. Peter's, Cavershaim, to that of the parisli of Cavorstam, was read a third time and passed, ASSESSMENT COMMITTEE. Tho oommitteo appointed to apportion tho assessment for 1911-1912 recommended thai tho parishes bo assessed as follows 5. Paul's Cathedral, £27: Alt' Saints', Duncdln, £26: S. Mr Spencer- Brent moved—" That this Synod' affectionately congratulates the Bishop of Dunedin on his completion of the fortieth year of his episcopate."—Reference was made, particularly by the president, to the good work done by the Bishop and tho numerous institutions ho had been instrumental in bringing into existence.—The motion -Was carried amid applause. THE CHURCH QUARTERLY REVIEW. Canon Woodthorpe moved, and it was resolved—" That this Synod congratulates tho Rev. Dr Radford, of Sydney, On tho sueccssful establishment of the Church Quarterly Review for Australia and New Zealand, and hopes that tho Review will be widely read and appreciated by the church people of New Zealand." CHUBCH OP ENGLAND TRUST BILL. Mr Spencer Brent moved, and it was carried—" That this Synod requests Mr T. P. Martin to insert in tho private bill prepared by him (Church of England Trust Bill, 1910) provisions empowering any Diocesan Trust_ Board (incorporated under 'Tho Religious Charitable and Educational Trust Boards Incorporation Act, 1684,' or any amendment or re-enactment thereof) to exercise in respect of all property vested in it (except where expressly forbidden so to do by tho deed or instrument creating the trust) all the powers referred to in tho schedule to ' The Religions CSharitablo and Educational Trusts Act Amendment Act, 1865'; but providing that tho power of leasing therein contained shall not _ prejudice or restrict tho powers of leasing which may liavo been or may bo conferred upon any such board by an Orderin-Council mado under 'The Public Bodies Leases Act., 1908'; but providing no sale Or exchange shall bo mado or effected without tho consent of the General Synod and of the Diocesan Synod in which tile said land is situated, and that snch consent may he given in tho manner provided by section 3 of' The Religious Charitable and Educational Trusts Act, 1908,' and that no purchaser at any salo shall bo concerned to inquire as to the application of tho purchase money to be paid nor to inquire as to the power of the board to effect any such exchange." ' STIPENDS AND GRANTS. Canon Curzon-Siggers moved—"That this Synod requests tho Standing Committee to consider and report to the next Synod upon—(a)] Tho advisability of all stipends being paid by the dioecsan treasurer; (b) the advisability of all grants from tho General Church Fund being made to tho parochial districts instead of to tho vicars and such grants appearing in tho Diceesaii Statutes of parochial accounts in a separate column, thus: (i) stipend givein by parochial district, (ii) grant made from General Church Fund; and that the Standing Committoo' introduces any necessary legislation in order to give effect to its report."—The motion was carried. MISSION OF HELP. Tho Rev. D. Rankin moved—"That this Synod requests the Standing Committee to continue tho work of tho General Mission of Help in tho . districts which wore not worked by tho original missioners."—The motion was carried.
SELWI'N COLLEGE. ( Tlia following is a report on Selw^ii Collcge_ by _ Canon Woodthorpe" The academic session began with an attendance of 37 students-*-J3 resident and four nonresident. Of these, 10 are students in theology, 18 in mcdicinc, 4 in arts and law, 3in mining, and 2in dentistry. In the theological department threo were successful in tho grade examinations of tho New Zealand Board of Theological Studies, three passed the first public examination in theology of tho University of Durhiwn, and onp the final L.Th. Two other students in their final yeijr have completed their examination for the Durham L.Th. this week. During the year Messrs C. L. Wilson, C. R. Allen. C. J. Bush-Kins, and E. J. Ncalc hav<s been admitted to the diaconato, and the Rev. H. C. R. Blathwayt to the priesthood. The University students have done well in their respective faculties, and several of them are among 'he. most distinguished _ athletes of the University. I have again to express my deep gratitude to the Very Rev. the Dean and tho Rev. T. Kewley, M.A., for their valuable help as honorary lecturers in classics and divinity respectively. The services in tho collego districts liavo been maintained by tho theological students and myself, with tho Lssistance. during the vacations, of our local and diocesan lay readoi'6. In addition to tlio services at Woodllaugh, Ravcnsbourne, Portobello Warrington, SeaclifF Hospital and School! we lravo been entrusted with the charge of St. Leonards, and I have undertaken, through tho college, a monthly service at Hooper's Inlet, and a weekly religious instruction class at the Ravcnsbourne Public School.—Selwvii Collegiate School: 11iC i warden reports that there have been oonsiderablo changes in the teaching staff during the year. In January last wo lost tho services of Mr J. S. Lomas, 8.A., and Mr E. K. Lomas. M.A., through their acceptance of higher positions in the Napier High School and the Training Col lego at Wellington. At the request of tho chapter, Canon Woodthorpe took over tho management and assumed the financial responsibility of the school; and from the beginning of this year he has discharged tho duties of rector and head master. \ViHi tho assistance of Mr N. DEFINING BOUNDARIES. Canon Curzon-Siggers moved—'"Thatthis ■Synod requests the Bishop and Standing Committee to define the boundaries of tho parochial districts of Gladstone and South Inveroargili in accordance with the reports on such boundaries already presented to this Syjiod by Archdeacon Stocker."—The motion, which was a, sequel to the bill passed defining the boundaries of St. John s,. Invercargill, was carried. THE CADET MOVEMENT. It was resolved, on tho motion of the Yen. Archdeacon Gould—" That, this Synod appreciate the action of the Defence authorities in permitting tho various religious Ixxlies to nominate officers and enrol Senior Cadets into companies attached to such bodies." CONCLUSION OF THE SESSION. Mr T. S, Graham was appointed diocesan auditor and Archdeacon Gould and Mr C. 11. Sbtham a Printing Committee. The appointment of editors of the Now Zealand Guardian was left to tho Standing Committee. Votes of thanks wore accorded tlvp Otago Club, the Athenrcitm Committee, the lay readers, and Sunday school touchers of tho diocese, thoso wiio had extopded hospitality members of Synod, tho press, members of tho united choirs who had falcon part in the Syu<xl services, Messrs Robin and Co. for the use of a robing room for the choir, and to the secretaries of tho Synod. Tho session concluded about 9.30 p.m.
