CIRCUS ANIMALS.

SERIOUS MORTALITY.

(From Oub Own Comiespokdent.) AUCKLAND, March 24. Messrs Wirth Bros., of circus fame, have lest about half a dozen animals since '

they arrived in the Dominion, including a lioness, a tigress, a kangaroo, and a hyena. The New Zealand climate does not agree with some animals, and in some cases pneumonia was contracted w,ith fatal results. Tho d'sath of the lioness and tigress through suffocation in the Karan< gahake tunnel occurred last week, whilst the circus was travelling by special train between Waihi and Paeroa. The train was blocked in the tunnel for a time, and the losa of the animals is attributed to the '6toppage. The question of taking action against, the Railway Department is being considered by the proprietors of the circus, Jut no decision nas yet been arrived at.
