HOSPITAL AND CHARITABLE AID BOARD.
The following aro the salient points of the various reports to be submitted at the ordinary meeting of the- board to bo hold to-morrow night:— The Benevolent Committee reports that a minute submitted' by the chanman (Mr W. T. Talboys) and Mr J. J. Clark in re cases in receipt of outdoor relief bo approved. The suggestions are as follow:— That application bo invited for the position of tomalo inspector, at a salary at tho rate of £78 per annum; that tho services of Mr Fraer be utilised, and arrangements made for him to pay regular visits to the icoulntry districts and report oji various cases, and, also on any cases that may be referred to him by tbe female inspector; that the health inspectors be furnished with a full list of all cases oulsido Dunedin, and instructed that when they aro in a district where there is any person in receipt of aid they will investigate the caso and forward a report thereon; tliat tho actual travelling and hotel expenses be paid the inspectors when outside Dunedin on tho board's business, tram fares while travelling on the board's business also to be allowed. The committee reports that 79 cases for relief have been dealt with at a weekly cost of £22 17s, and that casual cases for relief amounting to £7 7s have been approved. During toe past fortnight sis people have been admitted to tho institution and six inmates have been discharged. The undermentioned have notified agreement to continue their contracts for the period ending September 30, 1911— viz.: Messrs John Mill and Co., coal; W. Wood, bread; Blackwood Bros., meat. Tho offer of Messrs A. Miller and Co. to continue their contract for tho 6irpply of groceries at slightly increased rates for two items has boon approved. The Hospital Committee recommends that medals for practical nursing be granted by the board to nurses who show special proficiency in practical nursing, tho chairman of the honorary medical staff, the medical superintendent, and the matron to bo a committee to recommend to tho board final-year candidates qualifying for same by examination and by their work in the wards during their whole term of training; tho name of the medal to be " The Fraser Medal for Proficiency in Practical Nursing"; tho examining committee to bo asked to award medals only where special excellence is shown in examination. That tho offer of Mr Tom Lewis to extend his contract fbr the supply of milk to the Dunedin Hospital, Fever Hospital, and Maternity Hospital for a pericd of 12 months, at the present contract price, be accepted. The following changes in the staff have been noted' and approved :—Miss Ethel Fraser has been appointed as probationer on the nursing stall', and authority lias been granted to appoint a probationer required for tho sanatorium. No charge is to be made for the maintenance of students who may be ill while in -the Hospital. Regarding the outbreak of scarlet fever at Beaumont, the action of the medical superintendent in forwarding a minse for district nursing uiider the direction of Dr Sutherland has been approved. No further expense is to be incurred other than employment of the district aurse, and the patients will bo exptcted to pay for her services in accordance with their means. In connection with the ■ application from the -Nurses' Committee for a contribution to a purse of sovereigns to Iw presented to Miss Fraser, it was resolved that the question of contributing thereto "be left to the discretion of individual members of tho .board Regarding the order for a billiard table for tile medical officer's residence at the sanatorium, delivery has not been taken, and the chairman and My Wilkinson have been authorised to act in regard to the application for ( same to bo placed in the house surgeons sitting room at tho Dunedin Hospital. Notification has been received from the undermentioned approving of th« continuance of their contracts at existing rates until September 30, 1911— viz.: Messrs Kerapthorno, Pressor, and Co., drugs, dressings, etc.; Mr W. P. Latham, bread; Messrs Thomson and' Co. aerated waters, cordials, etc.; Mrs a' Singles, coal; Mr J. M. Gourley, funerals. Ihe offer ot Mr W. Stewart to continue his contract for the supply of fish at s.ightly increased rates, as per schedule submitted, has been accepted, as also that of Messrs A. and J. M'Farlanc for tho supply of provisions at increased rates for the items.
The Finance Committee recommends in regard to the Port Chalmers Hospital that tiie hospital nurse be scrtt for further training to Karitano Home for a cost of £1 Is Drs Borric and Hodges to bo requested to accept the positions of honorary visiting surgeons to this hospital; that the Port Chalmers Cottage Hosnital and the Forth Street Maternity Home bs placed under the control of this committee, and that the Tuapcka Hospital and Kaitangata. Hospital be controlled directly by tho local committees as heretofore to act as sub-com-mittees of the Finance Committee, who will report thereon to tho board. Tho conditions in regard to tho taking over ot the Teviot ambulanco waggon have now been approved, and the present committee has been requested to nominate members to form a local committe to manage the waggon as provided for in the conditions now accepted. The apportionment of the salaries of the imedical superintendent ami resident medical officers has been approved as follows:—£so per annum each to benevolent and fever hospitals, £200 per annum to the Pleasant Valley Sanatorium, and the remainder to the Dunedin Hospital. Authority has been granted to renew the fixed deposit of £600 with the Bank of New Zealand for a further period of 12 months. The quotation of the National Electrical and Engineering Company for, the installation of bells at tho board's ollices in Hanover street for the sum of £4 has been accepted. Pay sheets and accounts have been passed for payment amounting to £5089 10s sd. The balances of the various accounts of the board on the 21st March were as follows:—General account (credit), £2146 Bfi 8d; huilding extension account (credit), £1234 19s lOd; Campbell interest account (credit), £268 Is lid; Hospital Saturday account (credit), £857 3s "3d; laboratory account (credit), £315 12s Id;— total, £4382 5s 9d. Tho Tuapcka Hospital Committee recommends tho acceptance of the following tenders for supplies to the Tuapcka Hospita", for the year ending March 31, 1912.:— G. 0. Taylor, supply of drugs, etc., at schedule prices; Arthur Bros., rations and medical comforts (exclusive of bread and meat); Charles Swanwick, broad, 6d nor 41b loaf; Mary Oliver, milk, 2j[d per quart first six months, 2d per quart for second six months; 11. Winmill, drapery, as per schedule prices; Tie and Sons, meat, as per schedule .prices; Brown Bros., coal, Kaitangata, coal, 23s 6d a ton, Kaitangata nuts 16s 6d (subject, to market fluctuations).
