FREE SCHOOL BOOKS.
Sm, —While it seems to mo unnecessary to reply in detail to the arguments used by Mr Tynrtall in liis characteristic and ins'enini defeneo of free school books, it may bo as well lo preventmisconception as to the attitude of the country teachcrs towards tlw question. A resolution adverse to the system, jis} at present administered, was carried by an overwhelming majority at tho last annual meeting of the otago ]sducational Institute. As tho meeting consisted not _ principally—of country teachers, there is no room for doubt that country teachers are at one with town teachers in their opposition to tiro system. Further, at. tho an nun) mooting of the Now Zealand 1 Educational Instituto in January last, a practically unanimous recommendation was made to the department to usb t.ho grant, for perishable materials insUwn of for tsxt bools. The teachcre who would favour tho continuance of tho invssßnt oj'sof free book distribution coastitato in
all probability a very small minority, either in town or country schools.—l am, etc,. 6eo. Wμ. Cari'.ixgtos. St. Leonardo, March 15.
