MERCANTILE DREADNOUGHTS.
The blue ribbon of the Atlantic is awarded for high speed, and as nono of the leviathans now in contemplation are intended to vie with the Lusitania and tho Mauretania in fast steaming, tho honorrf will still remain with the Cnnaxd Company. It is as well, perhaps, that tho bSsis of calculation is definitely established, for we ai'o apparently approaching a period when, in other directions, one or two of the now big ships will create records. The new CunarHw, for example, will, it is stated, be 4JKi longer than any rival. The new HamburgAmerican liner Europa, for her part, will be 4.Jft broader than any oilier vessel .afloat. At tho same time sho will be l'|ft shortbr than the Olympic. Always supposing, then, that calculations which resolve themselves into a matter cf inches may be taken as absolutely accurate, the Cunard Company will have Ihe longest steamer and the Germans the vessel wilh the greatest betun. It etill remains in doubt, whether tho British or the German flag will be able id Sioast possession of the biggest ship. Tho Hamburg-American boat has usually been described as of 50,000 tons. The ncw'Cunar(lor is spoken of in similar terms. But d Renter telegram from Berlin referred to tho Europa as a 60,000-ton ship. Probably it Js her displacement which is referred Un since the vessel hns always been spoken of by the Hasn-burg-Amerioaci Company as of 50,000 tons register. Whether the German liner will Or will not ha the biggest ship we must wait and see. Ono thing is at least certain; not for long will tha Oljinpic and tho Titanic hold pre-eminence. An interesting fact about the new Cunarder is the contemplated provision for the cairringe of oil fuel. Thcra is apparentlv no intention of using it for steam raising immediately, but it is conceived that circumstances may presently admit of such a step. This, perhaps, is looking some distance ahead, but the Cunard , people have a broad outlook, and may ultimately kco their way to effecting great economy. The turbine, as might be "supposed, is "to bo relied on in the new leviathan. The Germans have also plumped for it in tho cise of tho Europi. Tho Olympic and the Titanic, on the other hand, are to be driven by a combination of reciprocating engines nnd turbines. There will be no great difference, between the speed oi t-ta fjcrman ami the White Star boats. The CuHirder, with 23 knots, will ho about a couplo of knots faster.—London Telegraph.
