PORT CHALMERS IMPROVEMENTS.
TO THE EDITOR.
Sir, —Kindly allow mo a word or two in reference to the letter under the above heading, that appeared in your paper this morning. First I would liko to say that I agree with "Observer" that tho remarks by "No Humbug" in reference to the persons who pass away their leisure timfl on J¥ii> seats the mayor has so kindly ilr.d disinterestedly provided, were quite uncalled for. " I am sure _ that anyone who is at all acquainted with the men who arc usually found occupying the seats, will at once admit that "they are incapable either of usimj foul language, or insulting ladies when passing. I really do not see why the mayor _ should not be allowed to spend his money anyway he .chooses, without being sneered at. He is usually considered well able to look after his own interests, and in this ease ho may be able to sco prososcts of a good return, where " No Humbug" can see nothing but loss and disaster. There is an old proverb which says " Cast they bread upon the waters and thou shall find it after many days."— I am, etc., Chalmers Cup 1911.
