• This socisty .held its New Year Ceilidh last night in the Oddfellows' Hall, Stuart street, the Chief Mr Dugald MThereon) presiding. Tho hall was crowded with an enthusiastic body of Highland'people. Tho platform was tastefully decorated with clan tartans, the M'Pherson, Gordon, and M'Kenzie tartans being conspicuous.' The Dimedin Pipe Band, under £ne leadership of Pipe-major M'Callum, preluded thei» proceedings with ohoice selections of Hjgt land music, and the society's piper, Pipo major M'Kcchjiic, played the office-bearers to -the platform, he chief delivered an address, which commenced by wishing , ill present a happy and prosperous New Year. He expressed the pleasure he felfc in secaig so many friends present to. listen to the music of their native land, and toenjoy a couple of hours in 'social pleasure. Ai letter of apology for absence was rea<J i from Hr Neil M'Fadyen, who ■wished tho meeting every success. Mrs Colvillo Vrote to say that, although absent in parser , , , she was present in spirit, and that elite had suffered a soro bereavement in the loss of her daughter, Mrs Duff, recently deceased The chief expressed the sympathy.of the society with Mrs Colville in her bereave ' ment, and at his request Piper Miiaro played Mackintosh's Lament, in memory of the departed. The Kev. , Duncan Mactennan, M.A. ilMcndale) related an old fairj . ' tale in Gaelic and English, which g'rratlv fascinated tho audience. The moral -nao i "If you attend ( to your business no harm can come to you." Tho : concert was excellent, and. all tho items were reoened with hearty applause. Mr A. C. Robert v son sang ,: Cuir nuas.jfli'uiira am botal ' ' and ''Mo nighean duDn"; Mrs Lister, "The bbnnios banks of Loch Lomond", ' Mr John Davidson, "My heathor hills"; Mia Annie Johnston. "Tho bluebells of Scotland"; Mr Wm Morrison, "Stoigh learn a Ghaeltachd" and "Oran na lio"; Mra Monknuui Dempster, " The boatman of the Forth" and "Ye banks and braes/ , ; Mr J. D. Johnston, "Tho gay and gallant Gordons" and "Ma sour milk cart." Miss Chisholm sang an original EngJish sorig by tho society's bard, Mr A. C. Robertson. ' to the air and Gaelic chorus of " Fal-al al-o." Miss'Campbell sang, '"Twa> within a mite." Mr D. L. M'Konzie con tributed a violin solo. Miss Bella M'Kcch nio danced the Highland fling and M-asfrr i M'Kcchnio the sword dance. A' Highland reel was danced by tho Misses Frame ard Masters M'Kcchnie, Masters Cohn,.andDan * , ' M'Kenzie also danced the' Highland fling >,' in grand stylo. Miss L. Reeve, the accompanist; played, the accompaniments Votes of thanks to the various perforraora having boon passed, a very pleasant m»et ing came to a close. ; ■
