OTAGO RIFLE ASSOCIATION

ANNUAL PRIZE FIRING

The weather favoured the fortieth gather - ing'of the Ocago Rille Association on Mon--5 day. The noitii-east gal 9 of the previous , day had blown itself out, and there was ; a dead calm at the Pelichet Bay butts, so i that competitors shot' under almost rillc ; gallery conditions, saving that there were ! a few oatspaws, as siulormun would call tlium, coming capriciously down the gttilies near the targets that could not be taken into accountat the shooting mounds further south. In tiie a'fternoon tile dull grey of the sky was broken by bursts of sunshine, making the atmospheric conditions eome- • what tricky, perhaps; but, taken on the 1 whole, the weather was ideal from every 1 point of view.. The competition was keen, | for there were 127 entries this year (a ' rceord), as compared with 94 last year. Very great improvements had been made , at the ranges by providing the new system - of firing at Bisley targets, These show . the lower half a grass green, and the upper a sky blue, with the figure of a man, disclosing his vital parts abovo the veldt to be peppered with impunity, and without the nerve-racking fear of retaliation. Under these favourable conditions s tho scoring was good. Last year, under bad weather conditions, only one possible at tho 200 yards was scored, but yesterday Sergeant Waug-h, at 200 yards, scored the -greatest possible number (35), and at 500 yards possibles were scored by Messrs Fenwick, Ray, Wills, and Cowan, and Corporal Bradshaw. The gathering attracted many visitora, and amongst tho veterans were Corporal Munro IMurihiki Mounted Rifles), who won the Victorian Rifle Association's badge in 1909: Private T. M. G. Frazer and G.
