INVERCARGILL, January 3. Since last season tho Southland -Racing Olub ihas effected quito a transformation scene on its course. A new grand stand and a remodelling of the enclosures have made it one of tho best-appointed tracks in tho Dominion. The improvements have been carried out on a plan similar to that of the Riccarton course, and are a decided credit to_ the club. Sir Georgo M'Lean, M.L.C., president of tho Duncdin Jockey Club, in declaring tho stand open, spoke in defence of racing and the totalisator, and his remarks were well received by those present, Mr W. T. Hazlett, president of the Southland Racing Club, made a brief speech in which he exhorted the sporting publio to moke their votes felt at tho next election, and concluded by calling for cheers for Sir George M'Lean, which were heartily given. A Press Association telegram states that at tho StTatford races yesterday the County Hack Handicap was won by. Bow Bolls, the Cardiff Stakes by Bonnie Lass, tho Dominion Handjcap by Shannon Lass, the Makuri Hurdles by Paul, the Ladies' Puree by Smilax, the Ngaere Handicap by Mulga Bill, the Handicap Trot by Pearlie Maid, and the Toko Welter by Silva.
