BISHOP CLEARY.

We do- not doubt that we shall be expressing the sentiments of the nonCatholic section of the population of this part of New Zealand, which has known him in the past as an exceedingly vigorous controversialist who has wielded an exceptionally incisive. pen in behalf of his faith, as well as'of the Roman Catholic community, which has respected and admired him for his distinguished ability in upholding the principles of the religion to the inculcation of which lie has consecrated his life, for his profound learning, and for his unfailing geniality, in extending to Bishop Cleary a most cardial welcome upon Ms arrival in Dunedin en route for the scene of his future labours. It will be a source of the liveliest satisfaction to those residents of Dunedin who have enjoyed Bishop Cleary s acquaintance and friendship in the past, when, living amongst them, he imparted to the New Zealand Tablet, as its editor, a literary flavour and a polished raciness that made it excellent reading, even to persons who differed toto ca;lo from many of the judgments circulated through, its pages,, that the opportunity is afforded them in the very brief visit he is paying to this city to offer to him in person their felicitations • upon the signal mark of confidence the Pope has shown in him in his appointment to the episcopate of Auckland. The career of Dr Cleary in the new and important office, upon the active duties °f which ] w mil enter in a few days' time, will bo watched with the keenest of interest by the people of Otago, and it will afford them no surprised that career will prove to be one that will shed lustre upon the ancient church to which he belongs. Their best wishes will accompany him to the north upon his departure from Dunedin on Friday.
