DUNEDIN DRAINAGE BOARD
The fortnightly meeting of tho Dunedin Drainago Board, held' last evening, was attendod by Messrs Burnott (chairman), Arkle, Small, Marlow, M'Farlane, Christie, Douglas, and Campbell. An apology for absonco was received from Dr Fulton. Tho Inspector of Awards wroto stating that it had been represented to him that a breach of an award was being committed by tho board in respect 1 to tho employment of a gang of men working near tho Woooliaugh quarry. Tho alleged .breach was that the distance from the Post Office was greater than two miles, and the mcn.'woro not being paid travelling; timo or boimr convoyed to or from their work.—Secretary to reply that tho work was witban tho distance mentioned. Tlio Distriot Health Officer wrote stating that a dangerous nuisance was being caused by a number of houses discharging ofFonsivo drainago into open ditches in a portion of Boyil crescent, Musselburgh, botween Bowen street and Victoria, road. Ho also complained of bad drainage .behied a houso in Littlebounie road.— Notioes to bo served on property-owners to connect with tho drain in tho first instance, and tho engineer to report to tho Works Committee in the second. Tho Town Clerk,' Maori Hill, wroto applying for tho reticulation of Bulniacewen Fjstate.—lt was mentioned that this was a big job, and could well stand over until sonio of tho nicio preying matters had been attended to.--Tho matter was rcforred to the Works. Commiltoo to report. R. Bauchop and Co. wroto applying for tho reticulation of Royal crcscont, Musselburgh.— Notices to bo served as to way lcavo through private properties, and tendors to bo called for tho work.
Tlio Now Zealand Paper Mills Company wrote apdyiug for lira reticulation of Woodhaugh.—Engineer to report. Professor Waters wrote consenting to tho reticulation of Newington conditionally.— Referred to Works Committee.
Tlrc Ohristchui'ch Meat Company wroto enclosing a copy of « letter addressed by it to tlw Green Island Borough Council, and expressed a hope to hear from the board that it was agrocablo to allow it to connect with tho board's drainage system via tho Caversham tunnel.—Referred to tho Works Committee.
It was resolved that tlio board tako action, according to tho solicitor's advice, against tliQ9o who had failed to c6mply with notice to connect 'thoir premises with tl» SeWOrS.
Mr Small, in moving tlio adoption of the Works Committeo's Sport (already published), stated that ho had a report on tho cost of various works which was rather too lengthy to read. The report was as follows:—Continuation main sewer through Gardens. £1492; new cast iron rising mains, £3558; Cosy Dell section, Maori Hill reticulation, £1880; Canning-ton section, Maori Hill reticulation, £1512; Playfair strcot sowor, Cavershain, -£174; city reticulation, St. Andrew and Stuart streets, £1172; Newington section, Maori Hill reticulation, £352; Dtmdas street and Wilson avenuo, £180; and iForth and Dundaa streets, £117.—1t was explained by tho Secretary that the resolution by tho Works Committee iin respect to tho Christchurch Meat was to defer the inattor ponding discussion with the City Council.—The report was adopted. Tlio Financo Committeo's report (also published) was adopted on tho motion of tlto Chairman.
With regard to tho Cosy Dell reticulation through Mra Broad's property it was resolved, on the motion of Mr Marlon-, to rewind a roso l u ti o „ 0 f tho board that notico bo given of the board's intension to construct a public sewer through, or upon, private lands comprising sections 77 to 84 inclusive, block XIX, Duncdin. It was resolved that tho engineer be instructed to prepare plans and specifications for a drain m common to sorvo sections 77 to 84 inclusive, block XIX, Dunedin. Tho board then went into committee.
