MINING.
The master of the Olrig dredge reports that there was a sliglit improvement in the wash in places last week, but parte of the ground "wero deeper than- usual. Tho master of the Mystery Flat dredge reports that he worked the western and centre seotions of the claim last week. The bottom was deepening on the west side; otherwisa there was no change of any importance. The Masterton dredge had a good run last week, everything working well. Tho depth of tho growid was unchanged., Tho master expects within the next two weeks to get on to rising bottom on the eastern boundary, cloao to where it was met with in the adjoining claim. Th« wash was still looking fair. There was a considerable amount of clay false bottom close to the eastern boundary.
The Secretary of tho Nokomai Hydvaulio Sluicing Company reports that water is plentiful. There was a. delay for a fewhours at No. 1 elevator owing to a leak in the bottom of the race, but the progress made has been good, and everything is again in good working order. The weather" is very stormy-vvain and snow to a depth of seven inches on the flat. No. 2 has made; good f'Togrca. The snow has interfered :with cleaning the Lion race. A. .''Nevis' correspondent of tho Groinwell Argus writes stating that tho miners are now returning 'to make another .start. The Lower Nevis sluicing claim made a start last Wednesday—and the coal teams arc expected out any day now ,to get coal for the dredges. The winter has lsen a very mild one, and although, there is not', a great quantity of snow on tho low country, the early fall was a good one on the high levels, so with a few good rains during the summer the water supply should no better than last season.
Reporting for tho week ended August 27 tho master of the Waikaia dredge states that the ground became poorer very rapidly during the- last few days of the week, and it. is possible that he might. 6trike a block of very pool" ground before' reaching 'the gold which ran into the block higher up tho claim. There is good ground goingdownstream, but at present it would not suit the working conditions of the claim to_ follow it. Tho face is'_ roughly 100 yds wide', nnd embraces the river portion of the dlaim, the depth being from 23ft to 25ft, .with a red clay bottom. DUNEDIN STOCK EXCHANGE.
