FIRES.

(Pe» United Press Association.) FEILDING, August 27. A six-roomed house owned by 111' W, Bayly, of Palmcrston North, situated in Camden street, was totally destroyed by fire last night-, Mr W. Clarkson, the occupant-, was away at the time. The origin of the fire is unknown. Insurances are not yet- available. . The seven-roomed house in Currie street, Port Chalmers, which was totally destroyed by fire on. Saturday morning shcrUy before 1 o'clock was owned and occupied by Peter Ross, a tanner employed at the Sawyers' Bay tannery. He and his wife were the only occupants of the house at the time, and when the former awoke about 12.30 his room was full of smoke. A hurried exit had to be made from the building, and it was impossible to save anything. It. is assumed that the outbreak originated from a'fire in the dining room grate, which appeared to be quite safe on their retiring at 10.30. The house was insured for £300 in the New Zealand office and the furniture for £250 in the Stasdarcl office. The loss is estimated at about £200 over and' above the insurance.
