WELLINGTON v. WANGANUI. (Per Usi Tun Press Association.) WELLINGTON, August 21. l'he Wellington hockey representatives, holders of the New Zealand championship shield, had to 'defend their irophy against Wangamii here on Saturday. Ibis was the
fiflh shield contest, of tho season. Tlio ground was in satisfactory condition, and play was kosn and attractive. Although tho holders have reached a high standard of play, and have proved thomsolvcs particularly efficient, in combined attack, AVanganui offered. them stern opposition, and at half-time 111} teams had scored evenly— 1 goal each. In tho 'second spall, however. Wellington asserted their superiority, and added 3 goals to their score, the game ending: Wellington 4 goals. Wai.gantii 1 goal. OAMARU v. OTAGO JUNIORS. (IV.oy. Ou:; Owi: CoiutrsroxDEXT.) OAMARU, August 21. The Otago Junior representative team was defeated here to-<lay by the Oamiiru Club by 4 (joals to 1. The visitors' goal was awarded to them for an obstruction nfter a penalty bully. Previous to tho ladies' interprovincial hockey match on Saturday a men's trial match was played on tho Caledonian Ground between selected teams in white and in colours. Tho rain and tho heaviness of tho ground worn against a good exhibition, and in tho circumstances combination also' was naturally largely lacking. OTAGO v. SOUTHLAND. After the trial match the selectors chose the following team to represent Otago in the match against Southland:—Goal, Gotz; full backs—Alexander and Austin; halves—Slater, Chalmers, Park; forwards —Moody, Calder, M'Clure, Rutherford, Footc. Emergencies—Back, Latham; half back, Moore; forward, Thomas.
