CITY COUNCIL REPORTS.

The following aro summaries of tlio'reports to bo submitted at Wednesday evening's meeting of the City Council : — Tho Works Committee rccornmcnds that the work of -extending Ann street to Queen's drive be proceeded with in accordance with the plan prepared by the acting city engineer, at an estimated cost of £BG as provided in the allocations; that 31 of _ the street gas lamps superseded by electric lights in the southern area o'f the city bo rc-erected and utilised for street lighting at tho various points in the r& 6peotive streets set forth in report dated 26th July ult., from the chairman (Cr Wilson) and Cr Marlow; that the oifer of Mr John Gray' to agree to the setting back of the fence fronting his property ill Heriot row to the proper boundary line, subject to the erection by the-.council at itycost of a concrete retaining wall- against the bank wbioh will.'be formed by.the widening of the roadway, be appproved, and authority be granted' to proceed with the erection of the wall and the asphalting of the footway fronting same at an estimated cost of £25; that in consideration of the paynent by Messrs Sid«y and Collier of the sum of £50 on behalf of tho owners of the -subdivision of Corstorphine, the said owners: be relieved of all liability, for tho maintenance of embankments in' the cakl subdivision, as previously required by the council. The acting city engineer has been instructed as follows:—Complete the forming of "the roadways and footways in Royal cresoent at an additional cost of • £12 over the amount (£SO) provided in the allocations. Act in regard to construction of concrete kerbing and channelling on both sides of Bitller street from Rattray Btreet to White 6t-reet, also in Jetty street, fronting Messrs Briscoe's premises,, estimated cost £125, lialf to be paid b>' tho Otago Harbour Board. Construct concrete -kerbing and channelling on both sides of Park street, from George street' upwards, as far as the allocation will permit, in lieu of completing .the construction on the southern side only. The Water Committee rcommends. that a length of 10 chains of 3in main be laid in Buller street, at an estimated cost of £S0) Tho comptroller of stores has been [instructed-to obtain and submit quotations for a bogie, in accordance with plan prepared by the acting city engineer, required lor handling the new pipes for the Silverstream race. The Gas Committee recommends the immediate reorganisation of the department, •the principal recommendations being that the services of an assistant to the chief inspector be secured, preferably by advertising- the position, with .i salary at tho l'ato of £165 per annum, tho qualifications of applicants already in tho department to bi given first consideration in making the appointment, and all applicants for the position to bo qualified gas fitters. Tho committee recommends that authority be granted to extend main's as follows;— J3urke street, Mornington, an extension of 15 chains of 3in main, at an estimated cost .of £75. .Crosby street, Mornington, an oxtension -of nine chains of ljin service pipe, at an estimated cost of £22 10s., Mill street, Mornington. an extension .of 2A chains of 3in mains, at an estimated cost of ■ £12 lfts. Springhill road, Mornington, an extension of nine chains of 3in main, at an estimated cost of £45. . The 4in main leadiiig into Anderson's Bay, an extension of three chains to supply lamp at corner of Bay View roa<l and lioyal crescent, St. Kilda, at an estimated cost of £20. Daigety street, St. Kilda, an extension of 3in main for five chains to simply lamp at corner of Dalgctv and DeCarle streets, St. Kilda, and two. consumers,-at an estimated cost of £25. That authority be granted to alter the position of, tho 3in .main in" Jetty street to clear the site of building to be erected by the Otago Harbour Board at an estimated- cost of £17. A report prepared by the city_ building surveyor, in accordance with instructions from the council in meeting on, the 10th August inst., as to the "advisability of using piles in the foundations of the extensions to the retort - house at the City Gasworks, is'submitted, and in connection with same the committee ltcrein resubmits its previous recommendation of the 27th July ult., for approval viz.: " Authority Lx> granted to proceed with the erection of the extension to the retort house building at the City Gasworks, in accordance with the report of the gas engineer, dated 18th July inst., submitted herewith, at si cost not- exceedmg £2650." The General Committee recommends that the plans of the public 'baths proposed to bo erected in Moray place as prepared by the city building surveyor and submitted be approved, estimated total cost of buildings, plumbing, heating, drainage, and furnishings, £10,1)00. That the application of the Cliristchurch Meat Company (Ltd.) for permission to discharge drainage from its works pipe proposed to be iaid from tiie City Abattoir to the city sewerage system, on .the understanding that the cost of supplying and laying such pipe be apportioned between tho company and council, bo declined. The Tramways Committee reports that Ihe traffic returns for the tramways for the fortnight ended 13tb August, 1910, as compared with the corresponding period for last year, were as follows:—1910: Receipts, £id312,16s 2d; mileage, 44,179 miles 56 chains. 1909; Receipts, £2276 18s; mileage, 41,874 miles 70 chains. The Electric Power and Lighting Committee recommends that the following quotations lx> accepted for the supply and delivery of timber required for Lake Luella dam: H. I', Moss and Co., for red pino '■ £89 3s sd, delivered at Lawrence; M'Dougall and Co., for blue gum: £86 5s 2d, delivered at. Outram. The Library Committee reports that letters of thanks have been sent to the following for donations to the Library — Board of Governors, N.Z. University. Wellington; J. J. Gray and Co., St."James place, Edinburgh; Cadbury Bros., Wellington ; Government printer, Wellington; and Mr M. Cohen, Dunodin.
