AUCKLAND, August 21. ' A middle-aged man named Peter Hallmail was picked up by, the police last night in an unconscious condition, and was token to the hospital. He had not come round this afternoon, and his condition is serious. • Nothing is known of the man beyond his name.

Tho Whit-tonga correspondent of the Herald telegraphs that a fatal accident occurred at Stoney Creek Bush yesterday afternoon. A' man named Edward Lnrkins, who was working for Mr Geo. Wallace, contractor, was.looking after some kauri logs- preparatory to their being shifted by a steam log hauler. When he was in the act, of., loosening a boulder that was obstructing the progress of one of the logs the grips flew out, striking him on- the side of -the head and fracturing the base of the skull. He was carried to Tairua by his mates, and was taken to the Mercury Bay Hospital by motor launch, but succumbed to his injuries shortly after admission.

A young man named Sidney Samuel Charlton, aged 23, the son of Mr S. Charlton, hotelkeeper, Hastings, was fatally injured while playing football on the Napier Reclamation Ground yesterday afternoon. Some close play having taken place on one part of the field, the game shifted, but Charlton, who had been taking a very active part, remained lying on the ground. At first it was thought that he was merely winded, but when asked how he was he said ho "Felt very cronk," adding that he had been kicked just below the heart. Ho was removed to the pavilion, and a restorative was administered, but'lie gradually sank, and died 20 minutes after the accident.

Edward Flynn. aged 64, a second-hand dealer carrying on business and residing in King street, dropped dead in Park street at 10.30 a.m. on Saturday. He had been in delicate health for a number of years, and as Dr Hunter, who had been attending deceased from time to time, is of opinion that he died from heart failure it is not thought likely that an inquest will be necessary.
