LADIES' CHAMPIONSHIP. (Pk* United Pbess Association.) CTIRISTCHURCH, August 18. Tho annual contest /or the New Zealand ladies' golf championship was commenced at Shirley this morning in fine spring weather. Willi minor events it will last six days, ono round being played each day. There arc 49 championship entries, as against 52 at Mamiwatu last year, and though many of the cracks have been unable to attend, there are present many promising young players, notably Miss Collins of Wellington, who recently won tho Wellington championship, though only 17 years of age. Tho form shown, to-day was consistently good, and, in fact, it has been steadily improving at every championship meeting. Unfortunately, Mrs Bovan, tho present champion, was unable- to come, and Miss Tweed accordingly won her match by default. Miss Collins prevailed over Miss Allison, of Auckland, whilst Miss Christie, ex-champion, was well up on Mrs Ward, of Dune-din. Miss Brandon, runner-up last year, beat. Mrs Mathcson: whilst Miss E. Pierce (Auckland] prevailed over Mrs O'Moara (Gisborncj. and Miss Wrny (Mamiwatu) over Miss limes (Maiia-watii). Miss Wray is showing very promising form, and is nicked by several competent 'juo'gcs as Iho possible winner of the championship. Miss Snodgrass, of Wcstport, West Coast and Mamiwatu champion, though only arriving this morning, after having been barbound' for live days, easily won her match. Miss Sncdgrass beat Mrs Rcvnu, the New Zealand champion, for the Mamiivatu championship. Tho contest of the day, however, was that between Miss Wood, of Christehurch, and Miss Nora Gorrie, of Auckland. Both players wore neck and neck at- the eighteenth holo, and an extra hole being played, Miss AVocd won. Results:— First Round. Miss Ashwcll beat Miss Buck-land, 7 up and 6 to play. Mrs Yon Zecllitz beat Mrs Mellsop, 2 up and 1 to play. Miss E. Pierce boat Mrs O'Meara, 9 up and' 7 to play. Miss Snodgrass beat Miss V. Bell, 5 up and 3 to- play. i Miss Campbell beat Mrs Barlow, 7 up and 6 to play. Mies Tweed won by default from Mrs Bevnnl. Miss Collins beat Miss Allison, 6 up and 5 to play. Miss Christie beat Mrs Ward, 1 up. Miss Brandon boat Mrs Matkson, 4 up a-nd 3 to play. Mrs Holmes beat Mrs Cox, 6 up and--5 to play. Miss Wilson beat Mrs Fergus, 5 up and 3 to play. ' Miss A. Humphreys beat Mrs MCarthy, 2 up and 1 to play. Miss Wray beat Mrs Innos, 8 up and 7 to play. Miss A. Pearco beat Miss Trolove, 5 up and 4 to play. Miss Hamlin beat Mrs Lewis, 5 up and 3 to p,f.y. Miss B. Wood heat Miss Nora Gorrie at tho nineteenth hole. Mrs Good boat -Miss Knubloy, 2 u-n and 1 to play. THE DONNELLY CUP. In tho afternoon play took place for tho Donnelly Cup, presented by the late Mrs G. P, Donnelly, of Hawkc's Bay, some years ago through the Hawlce's Bay Club to the ladies of Now Zealand. With tho Donnelly Cup contest thero is being played simultaneously a medal competition, both events being decided on stroke handicaps. In tho medal competition there is a first prizo for handicaps under 16. and ono for 16 and over. Tho Donnelly Cup, however, is open to ajl winners in one class. Miss F. Mooro (Christehurch), with a handicap of 25 and a. not score of 77, won flic Cup, also winning first prize for (.hose with handicap! of 16 and over. Mrs M'Carthy (St. Clair), with a handicap of 10 and a net eooro of £0, won the first prize for those, with handicap,- under 16, and; Miss Collins (Wellington) with, a handicap cf S6 and a net score of 82, won tho prize for the best gross score. Tho next best scorers were:— Miss P. Andersen (Christehurch), handicap 20, score 81; Miss A. Poarco (Wellington). , handicap 8, score E4; Miss -0. Kettle (Grev- , mouth), handicap 23, score 84; Miss JO. Bell , (Wellington), handicap 14, score- 87; Mi<s 0. Pierce (Auckland), handicap 11. ecorc 88.
