COOK ISLAND FRUIT.
WHAT PROTECTION WOULD MEAN. (Fkosi Odb Own Cobeesposdest.) WELLINGTON, August 8. In the annual report 011 the Cook and Other Islands the suggestion is put for- ! ward that Xew Zealand should afford the iruit-growini; industry some protection in return for the protection she receives from the Cook Islands, and it is urged that » fay be levied 011 oranges and bananas imported from outside the Cook Islands . from,, say, Mareh 1 to September 30 in each year. This suggestion does not receive the support of .Mr A., H. Glover, M.P., who is interested in. the fruit trade of the Islands,. From his point of view as a business nian, Sir Glover informed a reporter, this protection would be an advantage, but he'fears it would detrimentally affect the trade of the Dominion tfith Samoa, Toiiga,.. Hawaii, V&vao, and Fiji, which also send, us fruit. II these islands were compelled to semi their fruit to Australia they would naturally draw their supplies from there. Australian merchants ar& already catering fer this trade, and a subsidy has been granted for vessels. Sielbounie, .Sydney, an'd Fijv, and Mr Glover thinks that tile protection of Cook Islands fruit would ; alienate the trade of these other Islands.
