MR MASSEY SATISFIED. '

I (Fro3f ODR OWN CoRREsroNDf.NT.> ■ ;.- f WELLINGTON, July 28. Speaking to your representative with regard to the result of the want-of-oonfi-dence motion, Mr Massey aid':'''"l ani perfectly satisfied, \rith..tho division.- I /noved the amendment, .nat in the hope or with the idea of,defeating.tlie Govern- ; ment, .but oil account o| the fact that the Government so far has been unable *i ! to place a land policy before the country. ( I felt it to bo my duty to make our poei- •' ' " Hon perfectly clear. .1 ani speaking of the Opposition members, and I am proud of the fact that every member of, my party 1 voted with me fbr a'"progressive land!' I hope that the debate itud th(3 .y division, taken together, will have • the effect of showing , the Government that the country expects the party sin pawer to put, forward a definite land policy deal-' >'■ ing with' both ; Grown and '-Nativo lands " - apd stand by such policy. lam quite - sure .that what/has taken place will'do* ■ ar groat deal of good; at all events' it mil . .' show the people that ttie really progressive ' t rr party, in Parliament' ia on tlie Opposition 'o -* side of the House." *

ANALYSIS OF THE VOTING. (FP.OM: OUR OWN Gormspohdbnt,) . 1 '- A

WELLINGTON, July 28. , Not for a long iimo has a division ■''■ occasioned more comiiiont in the lobbies ' than tlvat which took place on the want- 1 > of-confidcrice motion to-iaglit. Last'sea- «.-w sion, it is true, five divisions Aver© earned against the Govei-nmeirit, but none of them , was .in *the nature of a vote-for the purpose of showing lack of ; confidence in tho \ ■'Administration;. 'As will be seen from, tho' report' of ...the',proceedings, -31 members voted ill favour oi tho. motion, whilst 41 ,wore opposed, to it. This is tho smallest t margin which the Liberal party lias> secured for such a motion-for upwards of 15 years. An analysis of the voting on 1 Dig occasion',is of interest. It .will bo seen that all tho members of the Opposi- ; - tion party, with the exception of Mr New- i man, who was'ill in bed, supported the motion brought down by their Leader. In addition, tho. resolution found favour 1 , with 'five Ministerialists—Mcfesrk Bo* (Pahiatuft), Dillon (Hawked Bay), J. C. Thomson (Wallace), Jennings (Tau marunui), and Field (Otaki)—all of whom are supporters' of the. freehold principkjAmong those who .opposed Mi' Massey's motion -were sis freeholders—Messrs Glover (Auckland Central), Grconslade ; (Waikato). M<icdonald ' (Bay of : Plenty), Myers (Auckland . East), Rocd (Bay of Islands), and Smith (Rangifcikei). The , •Government also had tho support of Mr T. E. Taylor (Christchurch)|. This leaves ■■ one /Opposition member (Mr "Newman), five Government .members (Messrs 'Bogan, Wilforrd, Kaihau, Guinness, and Sidej), - 1 one Independent: (Mr, Lnke), and ono Labour member (Mr M'Laren) unaccounted *■ for. As has been previously stated, Mr Newpian, who would have voted against ri tho Government,' was too indisposed to attend the House. Of the Government ■ ■ members who did not vote Mr Sidev, who it is understood would have voted with . tlhe Ministry, was en route to Dnnedin on account of the death, of a relative The, Hon. A. Guinness, who is a lease holder, was prevented from exercising his vote by reason'of the fact that he was presiding over the Houso in his , capacity of Speaker. Mr Kaihau arrived -' at the Houso -just as the division waa ■being taken, but owing to the fact that he had not been resworn was unable to use his vote, which;;in all. probability would have pone iniaypiir-of tho Government. Mr Hogan, who, Jis .a; leaseholder, : put in jm appearance at -Uie . House just after the division had taken'.place. The* ?H lcr ,£?7 e S I ™. ent who wns absent (Mr Wilford) is a strong freeholder. The - Independent member- (Mr Luko) and the Labour member (Mr M'Laren) arc both leaseholders, but it is not known in which - '• direction they would 'have cast their votes
