(Received July 27, at 9 p.m.) The . entrance of the Huddart-Patker liner Zealandia upon tho, Canadian-Aus-ji.MCj was celebrated by a luncheon aboard the Zealandia to-day. There was a large gathering of shipping representatives.Mr Appleton (managing director of the Huddart-Parker Company) said that he and Sir James Mills were proud of establishing the connecting! links between the two gems in tlie crown of the British Empire. They had no tenure of service: still they were in it for better or for worse, and were going the whole hog. If they got a mail contract they .would endeavour to make the service a better one.
Mr T. W. Whitson, in replying to the toast-of the "Union Company," said the directors always considered that trade would follow the extension, of its operations. They bad endeavoured to be always in advance of requirements and to be up to date in everything. ; He thought that policy had been realised, as New Zealand had prospered and so had. the company. lis red funnel was seen not only in New Zealand and tho Commonwealth, but iri far-off London and Canada. It supported over 15,000 people. Tho service offered a splendid opportunity for the development of trade lwtwccn Australia, New Zealand, and Canada;, but, more than that, it was a link in the gr<v>t chsin of routes which covered the whole British Empire.
