GIRL EMIGRANTS FOR NEW ZEALAND.
• A PARTY BY THE ARAWA. (I'aou Oult Own Cor.UESPON'DEKT.) LONDON, April 29. The s.s. Arawa, which sails to-day, is carrying a party of about 40 girls and young women for New Zealand. Mrsllumo Lindsay, who is one of the matrons of 'tho Brit ish - Women 's Emigration Association, is in charge of the party. This association has. been in existence-for nearly 20 years, and has doho excellent, work in (biding openings m tho colonies for domestic servants, and, to a small extent, for nurses, teachers, and professional women. Mrs Lindsay has just returned from Canada, where she had gone as matron of a party of 75 girls, who all found situations in a short space of time. Tho Canadian contingent consisted chiefly of domestic se>vants, with a fow factory girls, and they came mostly from Scotland and Ireland. Their ages ranged from 14 to 30 years. The British Women's Emigration Association come* in touch with itirls and young women who desire to emigrate, through such' associations ■ asthe Girls' Friendly Society, the Y.W.C.A!, and kindred institutions, and (lie greatest care is taken in keeping the young emigrants under the protection of the-'association' until they have secured some position. The association, for instance,- never takes girls to any place except where there is a homeeither the G.F.S. or Y.V.C.A.—where they can obtain immediate shelter, or to which they can go in the ovent of their situation not proving suitable. Of the New Zealnd party, 10 girls aro assisted by Government-. Mrs . I'.indsav thinks the party is superior to that which sho conducted to Canada. Situations have already been found for one or two'.girls in Wellington, and the majority will go to Napier. .This is the first contingent for the Dominion this year, and it is possible there may be a second.party later on. Mrs Lindsay will .spendl a month in .'the Island, and during, the short time at hor disposal she will niake inquiries concerning any possible openings forth?, bettereducated girl. She will return to England by'the'Arawa,
