LENGTHY LIST OF CHARGES.

WELLINGTON, April 26. Powelka appeared at the Police Court to-day on a charge of breaking and entering, and another of theft. He was further remanded to appear at Palmereton North on the 29th inst.

PALMERSTON N., April 26. Powelka, who was .remanded from Wellington to here to-day, will be brought up on- Thursday, and on Friday the series of trials will begin with charges tor ohences alleged to have been committed prior to his first escape from the Palmeraton lock-up. This series consists of the following charges:-Breaking and entering Mr Dixon's residence, Terrace End; _ breaking and entering Miss MKays residence and stealing therefrom ; arson _at Miss M'Kay's residence; theft of a bicycle; escape from Palmerston lock-up. All these charges will be heard before Mr A: D. Thomson, S.M., .a-nd should be disposed of in one day. The second series of charges will be entered upon on Saturday and Monday. The charges to be dealt with are: The High School fire, Millar and Giorgi's fire, breaking and entering Perry's premises at Longburn, theft from Airs Farland's, breaking and entering the Ashlnirst Railway Station, breaking and entering the Manawatu Meat Company's premises at Longburn, also another Longburn breaking and entering case, with the theft of an overcoat, etc. When Powelka comes here be will, bo charged with tho murder of Serjeant' Maguire. This charge will be heard about May 6. Mr C. A. Loughnan (Crown Prosecutor) will prosecute, and Mr Gif Ford Moore will defend. Detectives Cassels and Siddells have had tho working up of the case, and Sub-inspector O'Donovan ; s in charge of the police operations. There will be from 30 to 40 witnesses.
