WANGANUI BAND CONTEST

(Pep. United Press Association.) WANGANUI, March 17. The hand-contest was continued to-day. Tlie weather was gloriously fine, and tlm Quickstep competition took place in presence of a record crowd. The gate takings amounted to £350. Twelve bands competed. Wanjjainii Garrison carried off tho lirst prize, with a- total of 285| points. Of these 130 were for "music. Blenheim was second with 283 points, 122 being for music. Petone came third with 265 points, 126 being for music. Others finished as follows:—Nelson, 261 i; Wanganui City, 253; Manaia, 247|; Gisbomc, 247£; Cambridge, 243; Wellington Tramways, 233J; Waitaia, 232J; Feilding, 223-J,-; Opunake, 217.

During the afternoon Mr James Crichton was presented with a gold medal to commemorate the fact that he was the conductor of the finest performance by any massed band in New Zealand—namely, that at the garden party on Tuesday. Mr , Maurice Cohen was presented with a handsome oil-painting on the occasion of resigning the presidency of the North Island Brass Band Association, after holding office >, for 12 years ~ -

This evening the quartet competition took place. There were only four competitors. Results Nelson, 132; Wangaiiui No. 1, 129; Wunganui No. 2, 121; Gisboinfl, 107.

The judge said the winning quartet was the best he had ever neard.

Tho annual meeting of tho North Island . Brass Band Association was held this evening, 50 delegates being present. Mr Louis Cohan was elected president, Messrs Hoi- ■ ben and Charker were vc-clected secretary and treasurer respectively, time-keeper, ; Mr J. Hunter; executive—Messrs J. IV, ■ Muir and J. Trusscll (Wanganui), Pedcrson (Marton), Haybittle (Feilding), M'Connell (Waitara), Patchett and Jupp (Wei lington), Jones, Pringie, and MounseyV (IHlmerston North).

The disqualification of the five Wellington players who applied was removed. I t was decided to make no change in the grading system. The next contest is to be held in l'almerston North, Gisbome's claims for the 1912 contest to be favourably considered.
