PHILHARMONIC SOCIETY.
The following- report will he presented lo members of the Philharmonic Society at the annual meeting:— "In submitting the sixth annual report your committee can look back on the past season with every satisfaction. The strength of tlu orclicstra has been well maintained throughout the year, awl tlio rehearsals have' been very satisfactorily attended, and on this point mors than any other reals the success of the society, {or unless the iii-omK'K attend the practices regularly that state of perfection to which we all aspire cannot. l;r; reached. ! ''The society, as usual, gave four concerts, the principal works performed during' iho year Using the over-popular * JBl2' (Ts'eliaikowsky) and 'The Bailie of I'oltnwa.' by the same composer, 'II I'rofeta' (Meyerbeer). ' Overtnre No. 1 in C Minor' (Foroni). ' Fourth .Sympiionie, Italian' (Mendelssohn), intermezzo ' Pan-und-Eelio' (Sibolius), overture"" J-a Forzu del Destine' (Verdi), Syniphoflie ' Pathetique in B Minor' (Tschaikowsky), 'Third Movement; Danza Originate' (Cclega). 'Second Entracte from the music lo Nero' (ColeridgeTaylor),. prelude ' Lohengrin ' (Wagner), and piano concerto ' Xo. 1 in B Flat Miner' (Tschaikovrsky). "To our lion, conductor (fjigp.or Scpiarise) we are greatly indebted, and feu* realise the vast amount, of work he does for the. society, but wo know ho feels fully repaid if the members will show (heir apr]>eeiation of his efforts by regular attendance at the rehearsals. The conductor's one aim is to place the society second io none in New Zealand, and that can only be attained by the hearty co-operation of every member. ■"I'll.; society desires to express its thanks to Mr Max Scherek for his kindness in pre(he society with the 'Piano Concerlo No. 1 in P. Flat. Minor' (Tsehaikowsky). and for hi.s kindness in playing the ' Piano Concerto 1 at the fourth concert. To Mr J. I). M'Kechnie wo are also indebted for presenting to (he society (he intermezzo 'Le Deluge' (Sainti>aens). To Mr A. Gillies for presenting the society with Uszt'i ' Rhansody' and liadetz.ky's 1 March ' (Strauss). The fliank* of the society are also due (o Mrs B. A. liayley, Mrs K. J. J.cCren. MiVs May, ; ukl Mr J. Jago for kiud'.v singing at, the society's concerts, and to Mr J. Wallace for playing a violin solo; to the lion, librarian (Miss B. E. Thompson). onr assistant, librarian (Mr W. Fieldcn). Mr .1. D.
