SURF BATHING AT ST. CLAIR.
Sir,—May I be'allowed to throw out a. suggestion as to an easy method of largely increasing existing facilities for surf bathing in Dttnedin? My idea is to commence with, say, six large buoys moored securely about 100 yards from high-water mark at the St. Clair end of the Ocean Beach, with a space of 20 yards between each, those to oe connected with a 3in coir hawser. From cach of these a similar hawser could be led ashore, firmly attached to a suitable fixture, and at SO yards from shore an additional hawser crossing tho six lines attached to tho buoys, the whole lorming a network. Increased buoyancy, if needed, could be secured by attaching iivc-gallon kegs to the warps at stated in* toryals. Captain Sundstrum assures me tiiat he bas every reason to believe there is good holding grouud off the beach, and 1 bclievo wore this plan adopted" all reasonably good swimmers could enjoy themselves splendidly m tho surf, free from fear of disaster. For the use of ladies an additional line much nearer the beach could be furnished. _ The expense would be comparatively trifling, and -funds could be IV' ** J* PttbKc subscription subsidised by *ho City Council.—l am, etc., Duncdin, March 12.
