Drunkenness.—David Duncan was fined ss, or 24 hours' imprisonment, and William Crowley 20s, or three days' imprisonment, for this offenco. The Result of Drink.—A respectablelooking young'man named - William Lock was charged with committing an indecent act in the Triangle the previous evening.— -Mr Gumming asfced that the man be Riven another chance. Private troubles had led to his drinking heavily, and this was the ca««e of his downfall. If mercy were ••"own he would endeavour not lo offend agam.-Uia Worship directed accused to take out a prohibition, order against himsell; to enter into a personal bond of £25 to come up for mimx whon m at any timo mthm H montk, and to bo of CiT™"' lD l «e meantime; and to I>J> 7s, the expenses of two witnesses. i j , "A -} U *, orl Smith pleaded "Guilty" to being an Wle and d.sorderlv person w.thout lawful visible means of support.-The Sub-inspector said that accused came from Tasmania to Dunudin about a month ago. He was a tailor's cutter by trade, and because of his wandering about the streets at all hours had been warned by the police t 0 get work. Smith had been unable lo get work, and had neither home nor money, and apparently had had very little food.-Defendant stated that ho had a wifo and child in Tasmania, and had come to Duncdin with the object of getting work and afterwards sewtintr for them.—On.the Sub-inspector's application Smith'was remanded until Tuesday next, with a view to his being kept under medical observation. Police Abandon a Charge.—James Henry Wilson was brought up, on remand, and
charged with stealing' tour money, orders, of a total value of £71 7s sd, from a postal packet—Chief Detective Herbert said that Wilson had been three times remanded lc allow of the arrest of another person alleged to have been guilty along with him. That other person was understood to be in Australia, and there was no prospect of his. being soon arrested, though everything had been (lone by his friends and by the police ! to find him. The cass against Wilson could j not possibly go on in the absence of thy' other olfendor, who a little while ago pro- J fessed to bo anxious to come back to lacn ' the charge, but seemed to have changed I his mind nnd disappeared. Wilson had per- ! mancnt employment with Mr IJioad, of \ the Otago Brush Factory, with whom lie ! had been many years, except for the break pwhen ho was away in Australia. Ho went \ to Australia on his own account, and, re- \ turning, voluntarily surrendered himself j to the police.—(in 'accused's ' behalf Mr ! Adams said that it was obviously unju6t to keep the matter hanging over accused | and compel him to come to the court every ' week, when admittedly there was only a j very slender chance oE proving the charge \ against him. Ho (Mr Adams) felt entitled j to oppose any application for a further re- , maml, and would ask that the present I charge be dismissed, or dealt with in such I a way that Wilson need not be constantly | attending the court. Wilson lost timo j from bis work, and his employer also. ; Moreover, the fact that his employer went I bail for him spoke for itself.—The Magis- j trate said that, as it seemed that Wilson j would bo available if wanted, he would (lis- j miss the case without prejudice to a further | information being laid.
