Payne, an English student at Freiberg, in Saxony, was sentenced to four months' imprisonment and fined 850-marks (about £35) for fighting a. duel and resisting aiTCst. Tho aii'air originated over a quarrel in a cafo with l a lieutenant in .the army, who drew his sword, Payne thereupon struck him, and a duel "followed. The lieutenant was cashiered.
