BATHING FATALITY.
(Pes United Pbkss Association.) AUCKLAND, March 7. A sad bathing fatality occurred at St. John's Lake, East Tamaki, yesterday afternoon, tho victim beihg Mr Edward Claude Budd, B.A. (son of tho Rev. E. K. Budd, prison chaplain), who was studying at St. John College with the intention of entering tho ministry. Mr Budd, together -with Messrs Bamford, Wills, Gavin, and M'Quarrie (also students at the collego), went in for a swim.. Bamford, Wills, and Gavin decided to cross the_ lake, leaving Budd and M'Quarrie behind. 'Die deceased, being a poor swimmer, kept well inshore, while M'Quarrie, who was unablo to swim, remained on the bank. Tho other three had just crossed the ' lake when the deceased got into difficulties. M'Quarrie at once rushed into tho water, but was uiiablo to render any help, as deceased was out in 10ft of water. M'Quarrio at once returned to shore and called out to tho students on tho other side of tho lake to come to the distressed man's aid They immediately responded, but were unable to reach Budd in timo, and he sank. Gavin dived for the body, and brought it ashore. Artificial respiration and other life-restoring methods were tried for several hours, but without avail.
