UNIVERSITY EXAMINATIONS
. o . educational - conference 1 disl cussion., .'; (Pes Usited Press Association.) ''' WELLINGTON, February 13.' At the Education Conference on Saturday there was considerable discussion on a subject debated at the last meeting of the University Senate. It was started by a motion by Professor Kirk—"That the time has come when the university jshould conduct.at leas*, its. pass examinations within Australasia,', and 'largely with the help of the professors of its own colleges." At one time, he said, it .was thought that a certain measure of value attached lo the appointment of' examiners in touch in some way with the home university, but that argument did not hold good'now. Nobody cared outside New Zealand who the 'examinerc. were. The degrees fixed the standards of education. -As to disadvantages, the present system was archaic and expensive. An examiner at Home could take no account of the originality of mind of a candidate or his application as'a. student. Again, a great deal of suspense was experienced by candidates during the time they.were waiting for result's. Further, the present system tended to lower the professors, to the position of coaches and to demoralise university life.
Professor Gilray (Dunedin) pointed out that the Senate of'the University, by a large majority, had decided in' favour of the adoption of the present ■ system. Professor Thomas supported the motion. The system made crammers of the professors. • Professor Haslam (Chrisldiurch) denied that he was reduced to the position of a coach. He approved of the present system. . [Our meaage does not stale whether or not- the* motion - was ''carried.] ; ' FOR BABIES - There is no better medicine made for babies than Chamberlain's Cough Remedv. its pleasant taste and prompt and' effectiveeuros make it a favourite with mothers of small children. 3t quickly cures their coughs and colds, and prevents pneumonia and other serious consequences, Sold everywhere. •
