LAKE HAUROTO

FACILITIES FOR TOURISTS. Mr John \V. Rodney, of Lillburn. Clifdon, who during the past two seasons has catered for tourists visiting Lako Hauroto, has now built and taken to tho lake a motor launch, which by Easter time will bo ready for tourists. Anyoho Acquainted with tho many difficulties to bo contended with in pledging a 25ft' boat, through five miles of virgin bush can understand what a formidable task it was. From tho start until the lako was reached tho. greatest precautions had to be exercised, and it is to tho credit of thoso assisting Mr Rooncy that the launch reached the lako edge with very slight damage. By those acquainted with tho track the task was thought to bo a hard one, and on ono or two occasions, when deep and steep gullies or extra sharp turns had to bo encountered, advnnco scemccl almost impossible. It- looked as if tho motor would find a resting place in the bush. Tlianks to the energy of Mr Crow, whe, with two valuable horses, did giant work, and to Messrs Robt. Hood and T. F.. Smith, assisting Mr Rooney, all obstacles wore overcome and tho lako safely reached. In many places whero the grade was too steep or tho footing too soft for tho horses the launch had lo bo hauled yard by yard by means of blocks, which entailed very slow progress. It was a work of great skill, and a description can give bnly a faint idea of the work that had to be done.

Tlio motor launch service on Lake Ilauroto will bo a vory great convenience to tourists, and Mr Rooncy is to be congratulatccl on having such a handsomo addition •»ado to liis fleet. During tlio past two months there has been a very fair iiereen[ago of tourists at Lako Hauroto, but tlio lack of accommodation has no doubt prevented iiiauy poopo from visiting there. Mr Rooney intends erecting accommodation touts without delay. They will bo available tor tourists a t reasonable -atcs.
