GREATER INVERCARGILL
AMALGAMATION PROPOSAL. RESULT OF VOTING. (Fbom OUJI OWN CoßßnspoxniixT.) INVERCARGILL, December 8. There was a great deal of excitement and running about of motor cars and other vehicles in Invercargill to-day, when the poll was taken in town and (suburbs on the amalgamation proposal. It may be explained that some six months or so ago a Greater Invercargill Association was formal, and the executive set to work collecting data bearing on the position of the boroughs, and .selling forth the advantages lo be gained by amalgamation. After things had been thus put in readiness, the executive made a lecturing tour of the boroughs. There was of counse active opposition, particularly in North, East, and South Invercargill, and to-day tho big tight was recognised to be in South Invercargill and East Invercargill. The result was that the proposal was carried in every borough but South Invercargill, the voting being; — For. Against. Invercargill 1162 121 Avenal 87 46 Gladstone 115 66 North Invercargill ...' 180 117 East Invercargill ... 149 123 South Invercargill... 284 396 The result is probably the most satisfactory one possible from a topographical point of view, as was indicated by the president of tho Greater Invercargill Association (Mr W. M'Alister), in making a few remarks at the declaration of the central polling booth. South Invercargill is a very large, unwieldiy borough, and very sparsely peopled in'parts, so that it would be a most difficult part to administer _ in a united borough, as it now is in its independency. The Greater Invercargill Association Executive regard the result of the poll as one that is wholly satisfactory in every particular.
