OBITUARY.

MR S. 0. PHILLIPS. At his residence early on tho 23rd Nov, Samuel Charles Phillips passed away a.s the result of heart failure, induced by, I a short and sudden illness. Tho fatal ill- ' jkx-s commenced on tho 14th inst., and for over a week the deceased suffered great -pain, this being caused by uremic poisoning, which sot in. Mr Phillips was born iu 1836 at Reading, ■ Berks, England, and was tliere educated. ; On loavinj school ho was apprenticed to a tailor in London, hut, conoeiviug a dislike to the occupation, he, in 1853, enlistedl ; ill tho Usmanli Horse Artillery for service. ;' with tho Turkish Contingent, destiuod for Scutari, near Constantinople. On peace' ; being proclaimed in 105b he returned to .' England, and afterwards wont to Canada,.: ■ Iu the year following, on a return Iron* tho jfiioat Dominion, ho enlisted in the 100 th Regiment of Foot, ordered to India to assist in tho quelling of tho Indian Mutiny. Having seen service there, lie returned a-gain to England on tho restoration, or peace, and, still in the regiment, went to Gibraltar. Hero lie left the army sorvice and joined the convict prison, staff, in the employ of which he remained till 1875, when " the department was abolished. Once again in England, Mr Phillips was appointed to . the Pciitonville Prison, but within a few montlia of this being done he rccoived notice of his election by Dr Feathcrston, Agentgeneral for New Zealand, lor tlio Dosition oE gaoler at tho Lyttelton Gaol with general supervision over the Canterbury gaols. He arrived in. the colony in May, 1876, to take . up his duties. Mr Phillips continued in Wiis position till 1882, when ho was transferred to Duncdin, where he remained till 1902, when he was obliged to retire by reason of tho ago limit. As a prison official Mr Phillips won golden opinions from all ranks of tho community for his considerateness arid manifest philanthropy. MR ALEXANDER SLIGO. It is our melancholy duty to record the death on Nov. 29 of Mr Alexander Sligo, who has been for many years a well-, known a.nd prominent citizen of Duncdin. Mr Sligo was born in 1832 in Perth, Soot- • land, ahd was cducataod at the Old Guild , School iu his native town, and also at : Greig's Commercial Academy. In October, 1853, he sailed from the Clydo in tho ship Sapphire, but was sliipwrooked below Belfast (Ballyhalbcrt) tho first" night out. The ship was a total loss, and ho returned) to Glasgow to embark in tho Forest Monarch, landing in Melbourne in February, 1854. In Mclbourno Mr Sligo worked as a, bookbinder and paper ruler, and afterwardti wont to Bollarat, whore ho was present at tlio (imo of the riota. Mr Slbjo spent several years on tho Victoriau goldlields, and camo to Duncdin in, the beginning of 1864. On arrival in New Zealand ho sjwnt a short tiiae on the goldfields, and then Bottled in Dunedin, where he worked at his trad© for seven years with the lato Mr A. R. Livingston, and in 1371 he established Iris well-known business as a bookseller and Sl&tionor in George street. Ho took a leading part in connection with tho M.U.1.0.0.F., of which order ho was for many years corresponding secretary for the Otago distriot, and at tho time of his death" was Ecnior trustee. He also took considerable interest in educational matters, and for many years was a member and also chairman of tho Arthur Street School Committee. Ho was'chairman of the Duncdin Licensing Committee for throe years, and a member of that body for eight years, and was also a life director and ex-president of the Caledonian Society. Ho was also a director of the Koslyu and ICaikorai Tramway Company, and a director in several oilier publio companies, and always took an intelligent in--1 tcrest in all questions affecting tho interests ot Otago and of the colony as a whole. - Ho was for many years on the roll of juslioes i of the peace, and was returned to Parliament for Duncdin at the bye-election In 1897. t A Feildmg message announces the death I of Mr Alexander Mackay, ex-Judge of tho , Native Land Court, in his seventy-sixth ' year. b Tho death occurred on Nov. 25 of a " very old colonist in the person of Mr John e Johnston, of Kaihiku, who had reached his o eiehty-eighlh year. Mr John.-ton, who was it a" native of Moffat, in Dumfriesshire, ( arrived in Otago by the Royal Albert in 1855, and at first settled at (ireon Island, ,i but subsequently removed to Kaihiku, where he resided for many years. " The Western Star reports tho death of 0 Mr George Howies at the advanced age of •' 85 years, lie landed in Melbourne in 1853, <1 and was a piouoor of the eight-hour moved ment. Mr Itowles arrived at tho Bluff >t in 1863, and was always proud to relate *, that while there lie was instrumental in it saving the life of the Prime Minister, Sir d J. (1. Ward, who, when a small toy, was y playing at tho water's edge, fell from a d ixjat and was in danger of buing drowned e when he rescued him.
